Aubergine Purple Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Saree with Vairaoosi Grand Gold Zari Border
Aubergine Purple Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Saree with Vairaoosi Grand Gold Zari Border
Draped for an Indian American women's leadership gala, this deep aubergine-purple Pure Kanchipuram Silk saree is handwoven in the traditional Vairaoosi style. Fine needle-like zari lines are woven continuously across the body, creating a delicate all-over shimmer. Each saree takes 45 days from dyeing to weaving and cannot be replicated by machine. Handwoven by generations of artisans in Kunnam village in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu. Read our story.
✖ Handwoven to order, not mass-produced. Made to order, not off a shelf. This saree took 45 days — dyeing, threading, and roughly 20 on the loom — to complete.
The Vairaoosi body is woven in a deep, luminous aubergine-purple pure mulberry silk, its fine needle-like zari lines creating extraordinary depth and a subtle antique-gold glow as the silk moves. Mayil (peacock) and Chakram motifs are handwoven in gold zari across the body.
The highlight is a magnificent broad gold zari border, densely woven with traditional figurative and ornamental detailing, carrying through to a richly worked pallu that gives the saree an exceptionally heirloom presence.
Let the border take the lead: a blouse in the same deep aubergine-purple keeps the eye on the dense gold zari work. Antique-gold temple jhumkas and a single wide kada finish the look, with hair in a low bun so the grand border stays the clear focal point.
