Arakku Red Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjipuram Saree with Nakshatra Butta and Antique Gold Varisaipet Border
Arakku Red Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjipuram Saree with Nakshatra Butta and Antique Gold Varisaipet Border
For a Vijayadasami morning, when children begin new lessons and families mark new beginnings, the silk chosen for the day carries the weight of intention — and a saree that holds arakku red with the steadiness of a long tradition is the only choice that honours the occasion's meaning. This Kanjipuram lightweight saree from Idam Living, woven by the weaver families of Kunnam village near Kanchipuram, is woven for exactly that kind of morning. Woven using finer 2-ply and 3-ply mulberry silk yarns, it carries lighter weight and easier movement while retaining full Kanchipuram craftsmanship — the same loom, the same silk, the same weaver; only the weight changes.
The body is arakku red silk — the deep ceremonial red of the Kanchipuram tradition, a colour that has marked every significant occasion in the Tamil silk canon — and across it Nakshatra Butta are scattered in gold zari: the star motif, small and precise, each one a point of gold light against the deep red ground. The Nakshatra Butta repeat across the full length of the body in a measured, unhurried rhythm, the star forms giving the saree a quiet celestial quality that sits well with the Vijayadasami register of new beginnings.
The border is a grand antique gold Varisaipet field — traditional multi-band border structure with repeated woven lines — built in multiple registers of dense gold zari: geometric chevron bands, diamond-weave fields, and floral motif bands layered in the classic Kanchipuram ceremonial sequence. The antique gold tone gives the border a warmth that deepens the arakku red body rather than competing with it, and the pallu continues the same Varisaipet banding at full width. A saree for Vijayadasami. A saree for every new beginning after it.
