Arakku Red Handwoven Pure Silk Kancheepuram Saree with Kamalam Butta and Mayil Chakram Border

Arakku Red Handwoven Pure Silk Kancheepuram Saree with Kamalam Butta and Mayil Chakram Border

When the Panguni Uthiram festival procession begins at the local temple, the women who have walked this route for decades know exactly what they will wear — and the saree that has always been right for that morning is not the most elaborate one but the one that holds its colour with the most integrity. This Kancheepuram lightweight saree from Idam Living, woven by the weaver families of Kunnam village near Kanchipuram, is that saree. Woven using finer 2-ply and 3-ply mulberry silk yarns, it carries lighter weight and easier movement while retaining full Kanchipuram craftsmanship — the same loom, the same silk, the same weaver; only the weight changes.

The body is arakku red silk — the deep ceremonial red of the Kanchipuram tradition — and across it Kamalam Butta are scattered in gold zari: the lotus motif, each one compact and precise, woven in gold against the deep red ground in a measured repeat across the full length of the saree. The self-colour combination — arakku red body meeting the border in the same deep register — anchors the saree in the ceremonial palette of Kanchipuram's most significant weaving tradition.

The border is a wide antique gold zari field carrying the Mayil Chakram motif — the peacock wheel, woven as a continuous pattern along the border, each chakram a circular medallion of peacock feather detail rendered in the antique gold of Kanchipuram's ceremonial zari register. The Mayil Chakram is one of Kanchipuram's most auspicious border motifs, its circular peacock form bringing both beauty and ceremonial weight to the saree's edge. The pallu continues the antique gold ground with the Mayil Chakram at full pallu scale.
