Arakku Red and Bottle Green Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjeevaram Saree with Floral Butta and Pillayar Reku Korvai Border
Arakku Red and Bottle Green Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjeevaram Saree with Floral Butta and Pillayar Reku Korvai Border
At a Seemantham celebrated in the family home, the women attending understand that their silk is part of the ceremony's visual offering — and the saree chosen for that afternoon must carry its colour with the kind of quiet authority that does not compete with the occasion but completes it. This Kanjeevaram lightweight saree from Idam Living, woven by the weaver families of Kunnam village near Kanchipuram, is that saree. Woven using finer 2-ply and 3-ply mulberry silk yarns, it carries lighter weight and easier movement while retaining full Kanchipuram craftsmanship — the same loom, the same silk, the same weaver; only the weight changes.
The body is arakku red silk — the deep ceremonial red of the Kanchipuram tradition — and across it Floral Butta are scattered in gold zari: full-bloom sunflower-form motifs, each one woven in radial gold against the deep red ground, the gold blossom forms warm and precise across the full length of the body. The Korvai construction joins body and border structurally on the loom: body and border woven separately and interlocked, producing a strong seamless junction between contrasting sections.
The border is bottle green silk, and it opens with the Pillayar Reku at the transition point — the sacred Ganesha motif woven as a continuous line at the body-border junction in gold zari, the blessing of Vighneshwara present at the edge of the fabric. Above the Pillayar Reku, the KIB temple gopuram spires rise in gold, and the border continues in Varisaipet bands of gold zari. The pallu carries the bottle green ground with the same Varisaipet banding, the arakku red and bottle green combination one of Kanchipuram's most enduring ceremonial contrasts.
