Arakku Garnet Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Rettapet Saree with Antique Gold Zari

Deep Arakku red takes on an unusually rich character in this handwoven pure silk Kanchipuram saree, shifting through garnet, mulberry and plum-burgundy as the folds catch light. The colour recalls dried pomegranate skin darkened toward evening, giving the silk the quietly aged depth associated with old-Kanchi palettes.

This is a confirmed Rettapet composition. The body is richly populated with tiny thanga-zari poo buttas arranged in close, rhythmic rows. They read almost like miniature temple flowers scattered across the silk, creating texture and luminosity while allowing the deep Arakku ground to remain visible beneath them.

Border: The Rettapet is architectural and restrained. A broad plain Arakku field is framed by narrow gold registers, while the principal zari band carries alternating maanga-inspired paisleys and circular poo medallions set within individual compartments. Tiny geometric reku lines and a fine leaf-like edging sharpen the border without competing with the richly worked body.

Pallu: The pallu moves into a dense antique-gold zari field, creating the characteristic Kanchipuram contrast between a heavily articulated pallu and the calmer expanse of the deep Arakku pettu. Fine geometric texture across the gold catches light differently with every fold.

Current Look: Burgundy and antique gold have returned to the international red carpet through Keerthy Suresh’s recent TIFF 2026 Kanjivaram-inspired look. This saree is not connected to that appearance, but its Arakku-garnet silk and warm antique-gold zari place its colour story beautifully within that current South Indian textile mood.
