Antique Gold and Forest Green Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjivaram Saree with Mayil Butta Border

A Tamil family in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is celebrating a Kalyanam, and the bride's paternal grandmother has asked for a saree that carries the full ceremonial vocabulary of the Kanchipuram tradition.

This Kanjivaram pure silk saree opens in antique gold ochre — a warm, deeply saturated gold that carries the weight of temple brass and the luminosity of aged zari — woven in the Lightweight Silk tradition with finer 2-ply and 3-ply mulberry silk yarns. Floral Butta in self-tone gold zari are scattered across the body at a measured interval, the motifs dissolving into the gold ground except where the silk catches direct light.

The border is a Korvai construction in forest green deepening to black — body and border woven separately and structurally interlocked on the loom — carrying the Mayil Butta, the sacred peacock rendered in gold zari in a large, detailed repeat along the border length. In Kanchipuram's ceremonial tradition, the Mayil represents Murugan's vahana, and wearing this motif at a Kalyanam is considered deeply auspicious. The pallu extends the dark ground with a full zari field of peacock and geometric motifs, giving the saree the ceremonial depth that a grandmother's gift demands.
