Aubergine Purple Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjipuram Butta Saree with Rust Red Gold Zari Border

Aubergine Purple Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjipuram Butta Saree with Rust Red Gold Zari Border

Deep aubergine-purple silk gives this Kanjipuram a composed evening character, with paisley-shaped gold zari buttas appearing at measured intervals across the body. A warm rust-red edge introduces denser classic-gold ornament before opening into a richly woven rust-copper pallu, creating a traditional jewel-toned composition for ceremonies and festive gatherings.

❖ Handwoven especially for Idam Living by artisan families in Kunnam village near Kanchipuram, this saree spent roughly 20 active days on the loom, followed by dyeing, threading and finishing.

Structured as a classic Butta composition, this pure mulberry silk Kanjipuram features individually spaced paisley-shaped gold zari buttas woven across a deep Kathiripoo aubergine-purple body. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 14 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: Warm rust-red contrast silk carries a broad classic-gold zari band of repeated figurative bird-and-floral style panels, framed by fine floral and geometric supporting registers.

Pallu: The rust-copper contrast pallu is substantially richer, with a dense classic-gold zari diamond lattice across the principal field, repeated circular floral-style medallions, large paisley-shaped forms and several fine parallel zari registers.

Styling: Pair the aubergine body with a plain rust-red or antique-gold blouse, compact temple-style earrings and a single substantial bangle or cuff. A centre-parted low bun with jasmine keeps the treatment traditional. For an evening reception, a muted copper potli will echo the pallu without competing with the purple silk.

Current Look: Recent festive dressing has also brought richly coloured purple Kanjeevaram silk and substantial gold borders into focus. Rekha’s September 2026 Ganesh Chaturthi appearance featured a traditional purple Kanjeevaram in a similarly heritage-led festive register. This Idam Living saree is a separate handwoven Kanjipuram, distinguished by its paisley-shaped Butta body and rust-copper geometric gold zari pallu.

The deep violet, rust and classic-gold composition works naturally for Navratri and Golu gatherings, Vijayadashami, Deepavali celebrations, weddings, receptions, temple programs, arangetrams, classical performances and other festive occasions, ceremonies, cultural gatherings and special occasions.

What makes this an authentic Butta Kanjipuram saree?
This saree is handwoven in pure mulberry silk with individually spaced gold zari buttas across its deep Kathiripoo aubergine-purple body. The open spacing allows the richness of the silk colour to remain visible between the motifs, giving the saree a more composed look than an all-over brocade.
How do the aubergine-purple body and rust-red border look when the saree is worn?
The deep purple body remains the dominant colour, while the warm rust-red border appears repeatedly through the pleats and frames the pallu. In daylight, the purple and rust contrast is clearer; under evening lighting, the classic-gold zari becomes more luminous and the palette feels richer.
Can Idam Living design a custom blouse specifically for this saree?
Yes. Idam Living can develop a custom blouse around this saree’s aubergine, rust-red and classic-gold palette. A plain rust-red blouse, an antique-gold treatment or a more contemporary contrast design can all work beautifully, and neckline, sleeve length and detailing can be customized to your preference.
Is this Kanchipuram saree Silk Mark certified, and what does that mean?
Yes. This saree is Silk Mark certified. Silk Mark provides assurance regarding the use of genuine silk; it is separate from the saree’s design or weave classification. This piece is handwoven in pure mulberry silk in the Kanchipuram weaving tradition.
Are small variations normal in a handwoven Kanchipuram saree?
Yes. A handwoven saree can show tiny variations in yarn tension, joins or woven details because it is created manually rather than produced as a perfectly uniform machine-made textile. This saree required roughly 14 active days on the loom. Natural handloom variation should not, however, be confused with actual damage, stains, tears or significant weaving defects.
