Buying a Kanchipuram Saree from New Jersey — How It Works
Idam Living ships handwoven pure silk Kanchipuram sarees from Mendham, New Jersey to customers across the United States. Every saree you see on our website is in stock, photographed by us, and ready to ship. There are no pre-orders, no production waits, and no minimum orders. You find a saree you love, you order it, and it ships to you — free, anywhere in the USA.
This guide answers the questions we hear most often from customers who are buying a Kanchipuram saree online for the first time, or buying from Idam Living for the first time.
Is Every Saree Genuinely in Stock?
Yes. Every saree listed on our website is physically in stock at our New Jersey location. We do not list sarees that are not in hand. When a saree is sold, it is removed from the website immediately — or marked sold out if we choose to keep the listing live for reference.
Each Kanchipuram saree is a unique handwoven piece. There is exactly one of each design. When it is sold, it is gone — it will not be restocked in the same design, because no two handwoven sarees are identical. This is one of the reasons we recommend purchasing when you see a piece you love rather than waiting.
What Does Free US Shipping Mean?
Free shipping means we cover the full shipping cost for every order within the United States — no minimum order value, no geographic restrictions, no exceptions. Whether you are in New York or Honolulu, your order ships free.
Orders are shipped via tracked courier. You will receive a tracking number when your order ships, and you can follow the progress of your saree from our New Jersey location to your door. Most US orders arrive within three to five business days of shipping.
Are the Sarees Silk Mark Certified?
Yes. Every Kanchipuram silk saree at Idam Living carries Silk Mark certification from the Central Silk Board of India — a government certification that verifies 100% pure mulberry silk content and authentic handwoven production. The Silk Mark tag accompanies the saree and can be verified independently.
This matters because the Kanchipuram saree market — both in India and online — contains significant quantities of powerloom and mixed-silk sarees sold as genuine handwoven pure silk. The Silk Mark is the only government-backed protection against this misrepresentation. We carry only Silk Mark certified sarees, and we will not list a saree that is not certified.
Do the Sarees Come with Falls and Pico?
Yes. Every saree at Idam Living comes with falls and pico finished — the saree is ready to drape immediately on receipt. Falls and pico are the standard finishing that prepares the raw edges of the saree for wear, and they are completed at source before the saree ships to our New Jersey location.
Is Blouse Stitching Available?
Yes. Custom blouse stitching is available for an additional charge of $30. Each saree comes with a running blouse piece — the fabric for the blouse is included with the saree. If you would like us to stitch the blouse for you, contact us when placing your order or immediately after, and we will arrange the stitching before shipping.
If you prefer to have the blouse stitched locally or by your own tailor, simply let us know and we will ship the saree with the unstitched blouse piece included as standard.
How Do I Know Which Saree Is Right for My Occasion?
Each saree listing on our website includes a full description of the weave type, the body colour, the border and pallu details, and guidance on the occasions the saree is best suited for. Our blog also contains detailed guides to each Kanchipuram weave type — what Korvai is, what Zari Kattam is, what Vairaoosi is — so you can understand the saree before you buy it.
If you have questions about a specific saree or need help choosing for a specific occasion, contact us directly. We help customers choose sarees for weddings, Navarathri, naming ceremonies, and every other South Indian occasion, and we are happy to make recommendations based on your colour preferences, the occasion, and your budget.
What If I Have Questions About a Specific Saree?
Contact us — by email, by WhatsApp, or through the chat on the website. We will respond with any additional information you need: additional photographs, specific measurements, details about the zari work or border motifs, or anything else that helps you decide with confidence.
We know that buying a saree online without being able to feel the fabric or see it in person is a different experience from buying at a showroom. We try to make every saree listing as complete as possible — detailed photographs, full description, weave context — but if there is anything you need to know that is not in the listing, we are here to answer it.
What Is Your Return Policy?
If your saree arrives damaged in transit or is materially different from what was described in the listing, we will resolve the issue fully — replacement, exchange, or refund, depending on what is appropriate. Contact us within 48 hours of receipt with photographs of the damage or discrepancy.
Please note that Kanchipuram silk sarees are unique handwoven pieces, and slight natural variations in weave density, colour, and motif placement are inherent to handcraft and are not defects. These variations are described in our saree care and authenticity guides and are a feature of genuine handloom textiles, not a quality issue.
How Do I Know I Am Buying a Genuine Kanchipuram Saree?
Every saree at Idam Living is sourced directly from weaver families in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, including from Kunnam village near Kanchipuram where our founder Anula Naidu's maternal grandfather's family are generational weavers. Every saree is Silk Mark certified. Every saree is listed with complete information about its weave type and construction.
We do not source from aggregators, middlemen, or multi-brand platforms. We know the source of every saree we carry, and we carry only what we are confident in.
