Vermilion Red Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Zari Kattam Saree with Yaanai and Peacock Buttas

Vermilion Red Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Zari Kattam Saree with Yaanai and Peacock Buttas

Vermilion red, vivid as the kumkum offered at a Kanchipuram shrine, glows against fine zari checks. Little gold-woven creatures catch the light across a body that is both exuberant and meticulously ordered.

❖ Made to order, not off a shelf. This saree spent roughly 16 active days on the loom, in addition to dyeing, threading and finishing.

Woven in the Zari Kattam tradition, an exact network of fine gold zari checks runs across the vermilion silk, punctuated by alternating Yaanai elephant and peacock buttas. Each motif seems to emerge from the glimmering lines rather than sit on top of them, making the fabric feel alive in motion. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 16 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: Traditional Varisaipet rows interweave silk thread and gold zari. Dark linear accents, narrow floral registers and luminous zari bands lend the red a compelling rhythm, like the measured detailing of a Kanchipuram temple frieze.

Pallu: An ornate gold zari pallu opens into paisley (maanga) forms and a closely worked lattice grid, its geometric light catching differently across every fold. The structured register brings a ceremonial counterpoint to the lively checked body.

Styling: A plain vermilion blouse would let the checks shine, while a dark brown silk blouse would echo the finer border stripes. Wear with antique-gold jhumkas, a low bun and fresh jasmine, and let the patterned pallu fall open over one shoulder.

Beautiful for late-Navratri temple visits, Vijayadashami celebrations and the Diwali gatherings ahead.

Frequently bought together

How are the Yaanai and peacock buttas woven into this saree?
They appear at measured intervals on the fine Zari Kattam body, where gold zari picks out the elephant and peacock motifs against the vermilion-red silk.
What is the Varisaipet border like?
The border is made of ordered bands of silk thread and gold zari, with dark linear accents and finely woven decorative details, giving the red body a strongly structured frame.
What distinguishes the pallu from the checked body?
The pallu shifts to a richer gold-zari composition of paisley forms and a small lattice grid, offering dense pattern alongside the more open checked body.
What blouse could I choose for this saree?
The saree includes a 0.8 m running blouse piece, and Idam Living also offers custom blouse stitching. A plain vermilion blouse would let the checks shine, while a dark brown silk blouse would echo the finer border stripes.
What makes this handwoven Kanchipuram saree an heirloom choice?
Its Zari Kattam weave was worked by hand in Kanchipuram, with around 16 active days on the loom in addition to dyeing, threading and finishing. The pure silk, carefully worked motifs and finished pallu are made to be cared for and worn over many years.
