Taupe and Arakku Red Handwoven Pure Silk Kancheepuram Butta Saree with Mayil Chakram Zari Kattam

Taupe and Arakku Red Handwoven Pure Silk Kancheepuram Butta Saree with Mayil Chakram Zari Kattam

A remarkable conversation between quiet earth and ceremonial gold. The body takes the soft colour of riverbank clay, a luminous taupe that seems almost silvery beneath its dense woven zari. The Mayil Chakram circles hold their place within an intricate gold kattam framework, before the composition moves into deep arakku-red borders and a pallu of extraordinary texture.

❖ Made to order, not off a shelf. This saree spent roughly 16 active days on the loom, in addition to dyeing, threading and finishing.

This Butta Kancheepuram saree places Mayil Chakram motifs in a closely ordered Zari Kattam, or gold zari grid, across a warm taupe silk field. The small circular peacock medallions repeat with exacting visual rhythm; despite the kattam background, the designated principal saree type remains Butta. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 16 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: A striking arakku-red contrast border carries broad, tightly lustrous gold zari registers, edged with precise small temple-like geometric teeth. The depth of red against the muted taupe body sharpens the wide band of gold, making the border immediately apparent in gathered pleats.

Pallu: A richly packed gold zari pallu is woven with exceptionally fine repeating geometric textures, flanked by ornamental mayil-inspired panels, slim patterned bands and deep red framing. The pallu is noticeably denser than the body and shines with its own woven architecture.

Styling: A deep arakku-red raw-silk blouse with a clean boat neckline makes the border colour intentional. Choose old-gold ear studs, a long kasu chain and a sleek low bun; let the silk itself provide the ornament. For a contemporary reception look, exchange the necklace for a single sculptural cuff and wear the pallu in generous pleats.

Occasions: A distinctive choice for late-autumn weddings, formal festive dinners, Karthigai gatherings and December dance or music performances.

Why is this taupe Zari Kattam saree listed under the Butta weave style?
Butta is the designated main style, referring here to the Mayil Chakram medallions. The close gold Zari Kattam grid is a significant secondary body detail; it does not change the primary Butta classification.
What is Mayil Chakram in the taupe body?
Mayil means peacock and chakram refers to a circular or wheel-like design. This saree repeats peacock-inspired circular zari motifs inside the densely structured grid across its soft taupe silk.
How can I style the taupe and arakku-red contrast for an evening wedding?
A deep arakku-red blouse visually connects the border with the upper half of the drape. Warm antique-gold jewellery and a simple hairstyle allow the dense body pattern to look refined rather than crowded.
Can a custom blouse pick up the red border colour?
Yes, the Idam Living blouse-stitching service can help plan a red-led blouse design or discuss a contrast fabric, subject to the fabric and details selected. The saree also includes its standard 0.8 m running blouse piece.
What does Silk Mark certification tell me about this saree?
Idam Living is a Silk Mark authorised user and the product is presented as pure mulberry silk. Silk Mark concerns the authenticity of silk, not a guarantee that the zari is made of any particular metal or that a specific motif design has been certified.
