Slate Lavender Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchi Pattu Butta Saree with Peacock Border

Slate Lavender Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchi Pattu Butta Saree with Peacock Border

The colour of a rain-washed slate roof at first light, softened by a passing lavender sky. This Kanchipuram silk shifts between steel grey, indigo and a faint green cast, while the Kaapi Brown border gathers the warmth of old bronze and temple stone beneath a radiant gold zari surface.

❖ Woven in Kanchipuram over 14 days on the loom, using Silk Mark certified pure silk, by artisans who have handed this craft down through generations.

Woven in the Butta tradition, this saree keeps its shimmering slate-lavender body open and composed. Tiny Mayil and Kamalam zari buttas punctuate the silk at measured intervals, their gold catching the eye without competing with the border. The shot-colour field takes on grey, muted green and lavender tones as the silk turns. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 14 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: A generous Kaapi Brown border glows with deeply articulated gold zari. A procession of peacock figures and Kamalam florals follows an arai maadam rhythm, like a sequence of small architectural bays; delicate floral trails, narrow lines and saw-tooth edging lend the composition its careful finish.

Pallu: The Kaapi Brown pallu opens into a densely woven expanse of peacocks and curling floral forms. Repeated zari rows and slim parallel bands bring a striking, almost frieze-like order to the surface, in vivid contrast with the uncluttered Butta body.

Styling: Choose a deep coffee-brown blouse with elbow-length sleeves to echo the border, or a brushed antique-gold blouse for an evening celebration. Oxidised gold or traditional temple jewellery, a low bun and a few white flowers suit the changing slate-lavender light without overwhelming the zari.

Occasion: For upcoming Navratri gatherings, Diwali celebrations, temple visits, classical concerts, family ceremonies and winter wedding receptions, the restrained body and richly ornamented border find a graceful balance.

Frequently bought together

What makes the body of this Kanchi Pattu saree a Butta weave?
Small Mayil and Kamalam motifs appear at measured intervals across the silk rather than filling it with continuous pattern. This leaves room for the slate-lavender shot colour to show its depth and for the Kaapi Brown border to carry the stronger decorative detail.
What is the arai maadam effect along the Kaapi Brown border?
Peacock and Kamalam forms are arranged in a repeated, arch-like sequence that recalls small bays in traditional South Indian ornament. Gold zari and fine linear edging give each figure definition against the dark coffee-brown ground.
Does the silk look grey or purple when worn?
Both tones are part of its character. The body reads as silvery slate grey, with a lavender-indigo shot and a faint green cast that can become more apparent as the fabric changes angle or light. Daylight photographs are available on request.
Can Idam Living design a blouse to pick up the peacock border?
Yes. A Kaapi Brown blouse with carefully restrained gold finishing would connect beautifully with the rich border, while antique gold offers a more ceremonial contrast. The saree includes 0.8 m of running blouse fabric, and custom blouse stitching is available.
How should I store a silk saree with a richly woven zari pallu?
Dry clean only, then store the saree folded in soft muslin away from direct sunlight. Refold it periodically along different lines and avoid spraying perfume on the silk or zari.
