Sapphire Blue Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Varisaipet Saree with Paai Madi Kattam

Sapphire Blue Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Varisaipet Saree with Paai Madi Kattam

Sapphire Blue, Framed in Arakku and Gold

A glorious sapphire blue, as luminous as the evening sky above Kanchipuram, meets the warmth of Arakku red and the quiet richness of antique gold.

Handwoven in pure Kanchipuram silk, this Varisaipet saree is a beautiful study in contrast: an almost jewel-like blue body balanced by an intricately ornamented traditional border.

❖ This saree was woven over 16 days on the loom in Kanchipuram, using Silk Mark certified pure silk, by weaver families whose craft has been passed down for generations.

The Body — Paai Madi Kattam

Look closely at the blue silk and a delicate arrangement of checks begins to emerge. Known as Paai Madi Kattam, this traditional pattern has a subtle mat-like appearance, with softly defined squares creating texture rather than bold contrasting lines.

The beauty of these checks lies in their restraint. From a distance, the silk appears almost uninterrupted in colour; in changing light, the woven geometry reveals itself, giving the body a lovely sense of depth and rhythm.

The Border — Varisaipet

A generously proportioned Arakku-red border introduces the characteristic rows of a Varisaipet composition.

Fine geometric zari bands, repeated circular detailing and narrow deep-green stripes frame a broad ornamental panel filled with curling paisley forms and floral scrollwork in radiant gold.

The contrast is quintessentially Kanchipuram: brilliant colour, intricate ornament and a beautifully ordered arrangement of traditional patterns.

The Pallu

The Arakku-red pallu opens into an elaborate composition of antique-gold zari. Alternating geometric panels, fine linear borders and intricately patterned sections create a rich tapestry of woven detail.

Its warmth is a beautiful counterpoint to the brilliant blue body, allowing the saree to look particularly striking when the pallu is draped over the shoulder.

A Note on Styling

Pair it with a deep Arakku-red blouse, finished with the finest gold piping, or choose sapphire blue with a small touch of embroidery at the sleeves. Antique-gold temple jewellery would complement the traditional richness of the border without competing with its details.

For Vijayadashami celebrations, Deepavali gatherings, Karthigai Deepam and winter wedding ceremonies, this is a saree that feels both ceremonial and beautifully timeless.
