Saffron Marigold Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjipuram Korvai Saree with Orchid Purple Border and Veldhari Zari

Saffron Marigold Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjipuram Korvai Saree with Orchid Purple Border and Veldhari Zari

The orange of marigolds at sunrise meets the rare violet of a flower in full shade. Deep ink-blue silk gives the contrast a grounding line, while old-gold zari follows the edges like temple carvings lit by the first oil lamps of evening.

❖ Made to order, not off a shelf. This saree spent roughly 20 active days on the loom, in addition to dyeing, threading and finishing.

The Korvai construction draws a striking boundary between warm saffron silk and its purple contrast. A secondary Veldhari pattern of fine horizontal zari bands is woven across the orange body, while the border moves through orchid silk, near-black indigo and dense bands of antique-gold patterning. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 20 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: A bold orchid-purple to pinkish-violet Korvai silk border, interrupted by a deep ink-indigo to blackened-navy register. Stacked antique-gold bands show geometric dividers, stylised floral and bird-form ornament and repeated small ornamental medallions.

Pallu: A dramatic ink-dark indigo pallu with closely spaced gold-zari linear and geometric panels, scrollwork and a sawtooth leaf-like separator; a magenta-violet selvedge creates a bright last accent.

Styling: For an assured contrast, use a purple silk blouse with narrow gold piping; for a moodier version, try deep indigo with elbow sleeves. A pair of antique-gold earrings, a dark stone ring and a neat low bun suit the layered border. Keep the pallu prominent to show the intricate gold.

Occasions: Made for Diwali evenings, wedding receptions, winter family occasions and temple festivals where strongly contrasted Kanchipuram colours feel right.

In the current colour conversation: An October 2026 Vogue India feature highlighted the renewed visual appeal of orange-and-purple Kanchipuram colour blocking. This saree has its own distinct Korvai treatment, fine Veldhari lines and antique-gold detailing, but shares that expressive approach to contrast. Read the editorial reference.

Frequently bought together

What makes this saffron-and-purple silk a Korvai saree?
The Korvai structure joins the contrasting border to the warm saffron body. Here, the purple and dark indigo sections produce a particularly vivid frame against the orange silk.
What is Veldhari and how does it appear on this orange body?
Veldhari refers to a linear banded treatment. On this saree it appears as narrow horizontal gold-zari stripes, keeping the orange silk luminous while the border carries more elaborate ornament.
Is the darker colour in the border purple or black?
Both colour families are visible: a bright orchid-purple outer silk section sits beside an ink-dark indigo, almost black register. Warm gold-zari bands connect these contrasts.
Could Idam Living help create a quieter blouse to balance the bold colours?
A deep indigo or plain orchid blouse could let the saree remain the focus. Idam Living offers optional custom blouse stitching and can discuss sleeve length, neckline and fabric pairing; a running 0.8 m blouse piece is included.
How should I keep the gold-zari border beautiful between festive occasions?
Dry clean the saree, fold it gently in breathable muslin and store away from strong light and dampness. Refold from time to time and avoid putting perfume directly on the zari.
