Woven in the Kanchi Kattam tradition, A quiet field of tiny Kattams woven in silk thread, where deep red and warm ivory meet in a neat miniature check, like lamplight passing over a temple courtyard floor. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 28 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: A petite deep-red Arakku border edged with fine zari lines and a delicate floral-vine zari register, giving the saree a graceful narrow frame rather than a heavy edge.

Pallu: A grand pallu in glowing copper-gold zari, filled with a close all-over geometric lattice and finished with the same Arakku edging.

Styling: Pair it with a plain Arakku or deep-red blouse for a classic Kanchipuram finish, or with a warm ivory blouse if you want the coppery pallu to lead. Small gold earrings and a softly pleated drape suit its gentle checked field beautifully.

What does Kanchi Kattam mean?
Kanchi Kattam describes the silk-thread check arrangement woven into the saree. Depending on scale, it can read as a delicate mini check or a bold structured grid.
What stands out most in the border and pallu?
The saree is framed by a petite deep-red Arakku border, while the pallu opens into a much richer copper-gold zari field. This contrast between restraint and opulence gives the saree its character.
What makes this checked body different from a bold Kanchi Kattam?
Here the Kattams are woven on a much smaller scale in silk thread, creating a fine miniature check of red and ivory rather than a large jewel-box square. The effect is quiet, refined and very wearable.
What blouse would suit this saree?
A plain Arakku, deep red or even muted copper blouse would work beautifully. Idam Living can also discuss a custom blouse design if you want to echo the checked body or pallu tones.
How should I care for the fine checked silk body and zari pallu?
Dry clean only, store in breathable muslin, and refold periodically so the zari does not crease along the same fold line each time.
