Pearl Grey Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjeevaram Varisaipet Saree with Arakku Border

Pearl Grey Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjeevaram Varisaipet Saree with Arakku Border

Like the pale mist of a Kanchipuram morning before a temple door opens, this pearl-grey silk holds a cool, serene light. Small Arakku-coloured Kalam buttas lead into a deep maroon border burnished with gold.

❖ 16 days of loom work went into this saree, handwoven in Kanchipuram by generations of artisan weaver families using certified pure silk.

The Varisaipet border sets rows of traditional zari ornament against the delicate pearl-grey body. Unlike the gold buttas of many Kanchipuram silks, its small maroon Kalam paisleys echo the Arakku edge, tying the soft grey and richly woven pallu together. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 16 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: An Arakku maroon Varisaipet border of stacked Mayil Kann peacock-eye bands, Thazhampoo Reku points, Rudraksham patterning and gold peacock ornament framed by narrow geometric rows.

Pallu: A deep Arakku maroon pallu filled with fine vertical gold bands, intricate patterned registers, geometric grid accents, chakra-style medallion ornament and peacock motifs.

Styling: For a restrained look, wear it with a pearl-grey blouse finished in slender Arakku piping. A full Arakku blouse and antique-gold jewellery will feel more ceremonial. The subtle grey body makes the detailed border especially expressive for wedding rituals, temple visits and festive evenings.

Frequently bought together

What makes this pearl-grey saree a Varisaipet Kanjeevaram?
Its Arakku border is built from successive rows of different zari ornaments, the hallmark of Varisaipet styling. The layered maroon-and-gold border frames a comparatively delicate grey silk field.
Are the small Kalam motifs gold or maroon on this saree?
The small Kalam-shaped paisley buttas on this particular pearl-grey body are maroon, not gold. Their colour repeats the Arakku border and creates a more understated rhythm.
Would an Arakku blouse overwhelm the pale grey silk?
An Arakku blouse creates a deliberate, traditional contrast, while a pearl-grey blouse with maroon piping feels quieter. Either approach draws on colours already present in the saree.
Can I request a custom blouse based on the border motifs?
You can send Idam Living references for your preferred blouse cut, sleeve length and motif inspiration. A custom design can be discussed without promising an exact reproduction of the woven border.
How does Idam Living advise caring for a silk saree with this much zari?
Dry clean only, store it folded in soft muslin away from direct sunlight, and refold periodically to avoid fixed creases. Keep perfume and other sprays away from the silk and zari.
