Peacock Blue and Green Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Vairaoosi Saree with Plum Red Zari Border

Peacock Blue and Green Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Vairaoosi Saree with Plum Red Zari Border

Peacock blue holds the depth of a monsoon sky, while green rises through it like new leaves after rain. Between them, fine threads of gold catch the light, and a plum-red border brings the quiet richness of an old Kanchipuram silk.

❖ Made to order, not off a shelf. This saree spent roughly 20 active days on the loom, in addition to dyeing, threading and finishing.

Woven in the Vairaoosi tradition, this saree carries closely ordered, needle-fine lines of silk and zari, allowing peacock-blue and green to move in and out of view with the slightest change of light. Spaced Chen buttas in zari interrupt the rhythm just enough to give the body a delicate sense of ornament. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 20 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: The plum-red and purple border opens into luminous gold zari, with repeated kodi butta details and Banarasi-inspired ornamental motifs. Like the carved borders of an old temple doorway, its richly layered bands frame the finer Vairaoosi stripes without taking their light away.

Pallu: A copper-red glow settles over the pallu, crossed by a densely worked lattice of gold zari and Rudhraksham motifs. Its intricate geometry brings a second rhythm to the saree, more ceremonial than the body, with a shifting radiance when the silk is worn over the shoulder.

Styling: Pair the blue-green body with a deep plum or antique gold blouse. A traditional gold necklace, small jhumkas and a neatly opened pallu will let the contrast border glow, while a low bun keeps the attention on the silk and its fine lines.

Lovely for upcoming Vijayadashami gatherings, Diwali celebrations, temple visits and classical music evenings.

Frequently bought together

What does Vairaoosi mean in Kanchipuram weaving?
Vairaoosi describes a fine, needle-like striped treatment in handwoven Kanchipuram silk. In these sarees, closely ordered silk and zari filaments give the body a precise linear rhythm rather than a wide striped or checked pattern.
Why does the peacock-blue and green body appear to change colour?
The thin Vairaoosi lines place blue, green and small glints of zari very close together. Their prominence changes naturally as folds catch the light, giving this saree a peacock-feather quality without changing its actual woven colours.
What is special about this saree’s plum-red border and pallu?
The contrast border carries kodi butta and Banarasi-inspired ornamental language, while the copper-red pallu develops into a zari lattice with Rudhraksham detailing. The broad ornament plays against the fine body stripes, making the saree especially striking when the pallu is opened.
Would a green or plum blouse be better with this Vairaoosi saree?
A deep green blouse would draw attention to the stripe colours, while plum picks up the warmer border. Idam Living can help with a custom blouse design and stitching; the saree already includes its standard 0.8 m running blouse piece.
How should I store the fine zari stripes on this silk saree?
Dry clean only, then store the saree folded in soft muslin away from sunlight and moisture. Refold it occasionally along different folds and avoid spraying perfume directly on the silk or zari.
