Neelam Blue Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjivaram Pattupet Saree with Red Kamalam Varisaipet Border

Neelam Blue Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjivaram Pattupet Saree with Red Kamalam Varisaipet Border

Neelam blue as deep as the evening sky after a Kanchipuram rain, framed by the vermilion red of a hibiscus in bloom. This handwoven pure silk Pattupet saree is an ode to colour and the natural radiance of silk, with little Kamalam flowers placed like blossoms across an open field of blue.

❖ Made to order, not off a shelf. This saree spent roughly 15 active days on the loom, in addition to dyeing, threading and finishing.

In the Pattupet tradition, silk itself takes the place of metallic ornament. Across the vivid Neelam blue body, circular Kamalam lotus buttas appear at generous intervals, alternating in vermilion red and pale jasmine-white silk thread. The restrained placement allows the blue silk to breathe and catch the light. Without zari, the lustre comes from the weave itself. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 15 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: A radiant vermilion-red Pattupet border unfolds in the measured rhythm of Varisaipet, with repeated rows of Kamalam flowers woven in pale jasmine-white silk thread. Slim leaf-green patterned bands and finer linear details bring the quiet contrast of garden foliage to the red. There is no zari in this design; the silk threads and the natural sheen of the fabric create its rich, old-Kanchi presence.

Pallu: The red pallu extends the floral rhythm in long, carefully spaced rows of Kamalam, alternating with slim pale and leaf-green silk-thread bands. Small contrasting woven motifs punctuate the central red field, while the blue-and-red tasselled edge lends a traditional finish.

Styling: Pair the saree with a simple vermilion silk blouse or let the Neelam blue remain the focus with an understated ivory blouse. Temple-inspired gold jewellery, a small red bindi and fresh jasmine in a low bun complement the silk-thread florals. For a more contemporary drape, keep the shoulder pleats neat so the patterned red pallu remains visible.

Especially lovely for Navratri gatherings, Deepavali celebrations, Karthigai Deepam, temple visits, classical music evenings and family ceremonies where a traditional Kanchipuram can be worn without a heavily zari-worked border.

What is Pattupet, and why does this saree have no zari?
Pattupet is a silk-led Kanchipuram border treatment. Here the red border is decorated with Kamalam and repeated Varisaipet-style rows in coloured silk thread rather than metallic zari. The richness comes from the luminous silk and the precision of the woven pattern.
How are the Kamalam buttas arranged on the Neelam blue body?
The lotus-inspired Kamalam motifs sit inside small circular medallions, spaced across the blue body. Their threads alternate between red and pale jasmine white, creating a delicate rhythm without filling the entire field.
Does the pallu have the same lotus detailing as the border?
Yes. The contrasting red pallu carries repeated floral rows, slim silk-thread bands and small motifs through its central panel. The strong red against the blue body gives the saree a distinct traditional Kanchipuram drape.
Can Idam Living design a blouse for this blue and red Pattupet saree?
Yes. A vermilion red blouse draws out the border, while an ivory or plain Neelam blue blouse offers a quieter look. Idam Living can help plan a made-to-measure blouse around your preferred neckline, sleeves and measurements; custom blouse stitching is complimentary with your saree during the limited-time Diwali offer.
How should I preserve the silk-thread floral work?
Dry clean the saree only. After wearing, air it away from direct sunlight before storing it folded in soft muslin, and refold periodically. Avoid spraying perfume directly on the silk.
