Multicolour Jewel Box Checks Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjeevaram Saree with Ivory Rettapet Border

A thousand little colour conversations seem to sit within the jewel-box checks of this saree, before giving way to the calm of a cool ivory seer pallu.

❖ Roughly 28 days at the loom shaped this saree, handwoven in Kanchipuram by artisan weaving families.

Woven in the Kanchi Kattam tradition, An orderly field of bright jewel-box silk checks in green, teal, yellow, berry-magenta, russet orange, cocoa, mist-grey and other closely related tones, each square edged crisply against its neighbour. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 28 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: A broad cool ivory border with fine paired gold lines, subtle Rettapet framing and a serrated multicoloured Pillayar Reku-style transition where the chequered body meets the pale silk.

Pallu: An understated ivory seer pallu with restrained narrow gold-zari lines instead of a densely figured brocade field.

Styling: Let the airy ivory border lead the look with a simple warm-ivory blouse and old-gold studs, or select a berry-pink blouse for more festive contrast. A narrow shoulder pleat and minimal accessories make the lively Kanchi Kattam checks feel crisp rather than busy.

What does Kanchi Kattam mean?
Kanchi Kattam is the traditional silk-check arrangement woven into the body. In this saree, several silk colours are organised into regular squares, creating a lively jewel-box effect.
What is the pointed multicolour edging near the ivory border?
A repeated serrated transition, described here as Pillayar Reku-style edging, visually joins the coloured checks with the broad pale border. The adjacent twin-register treatment is referred to as Rettapet.
How does this jewel-box checked saree differ from a grand-pallu version?
Its multicolour body is partnered with an ivory seer pallu defined by fine gold lines, rather than an all-over ornamental zari field. This creates a quieter finish to the vivid checks.
Can I pair this checked saree with a simple ivory blouse?
Yes. Warm or cool ivory is a natural companion to the pale seer pallu, while berry pink creates sharper contrast. Custom blouse stitching can be discussed with Idam Living.
Does Idam Living include Fall and Pico?
Yes, Fall and Picot finishing is complimentary. It is a separate finishing service rather than a part of the handweaving process.
