Kungumam Red Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Vairaoosi Saree with Sona Rupa Paisley Buttas

Kungumam Red Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Vairaoosi Saree with Sona Rupa Paisley Buttas

The radiant red of this silk recalls kumkum resting on a temple threshold, its quiet Vairaoosi lines catching light as the pleats move. Small Sona Rupa paisley buttas lend just enough ornament to the luminous ground.

❖ Made to order, not off a shelf. This saree spent roughly 20 active days on the loom, in addition to dyeing, threading and finishing.

Woven in the Vairaoosi tradition, the body is marked by fine, needle-like lines rather than broad checks. The rhythmic silk structure carries spaced maanga buttas in contrasting gold- and silver-toned zari, allowing the silk and the motifs to take turns catching the light. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 20 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: A slim zari border holds an orderly procession of yaanai motifs, recalling the carved elephant friezes along old South Indian temple walls. Its narrow scale gives the bright red body a beautifully considered frame.

Pallu: The pallu brings the richest detailing: paisley forms rest within an intricate lattice-grid field, accompanied by Yazhi and peacock motifs. The layered gold work gives depth without losing the clarity of the red silk.

Styling: Pair with a closely matched red silk blouse for a continuous field of colour, or choose antique gold for contrast. Temple jewellery and a low bun with jasmine complement the miniature elephant border; a crisp shoulder pallu makes the lattice work visible.

Occasions: Especially suited to Diwali gatherings, temple ceremonies, wedding celebrations and evening cultural programmes.

What is Vairaoosi weaving in this red Kanchipuram saree?
Vairaoosi refers to fine, needle-like linear striping. Here those closely ordered lines form the silk body, while spaced paisley buttas in Sona Rupa add a second, quieter rhythm.
What is Sona Rupa on the paisley buttas?
Sona Rupa describes the visual pairing of gold- and silver-toned zari. It gives the small maanga motifs two contrasting metallic tones; it is not a claim about the precious-metal purity of the zari.
Why is the elephant border comparatively slim?
The narrow yaanai border frames the vivid red without overpowering the finely lined body. When pleated, the repeated elephants make a neat ornamental edge while the elaborate pallu provides the stronger finish.
Can Idam Living help design a blouse for this saree?
Yes. The saree includes a 0.8 m running blouse piece, and Idam Living offers custom blouse stitching. A red blouse keeps the look tonal, while an antique-gold blouse can echo the zari; design requests can be discussed before stitching.
Is the saree made from pure silk?
It is offered as a Silk Mark certified, handwoven pure mulberry-silk Kanchipuram saree. The Silk Mark assurance concerns silk authenticity rather than the purity of the zari or any individual motif.
