Kumkumam Red Kanchipuram Butta Silk Saree with Bird Motifs, Nakshatram Checks & Floral Zari Jaal Border

Kumkumam Red Kanchipuram Butta Silk Saree with Bird Motifs, Nakshatram Checks & Floral Zari Jaal Border

A brilliant Kumkumam Red, saturated with warmth and the unmistakable radiance of pure Kanchipuram silk. This handwoven saree brings together three distinct ornamental compositions: graceful perched-bird gold zari buttas, delicate Nakshatram checks and an expansive floral zari jaal border. A narrow bottle-green selvedge completes its remarkable red-and-gold composition.

❖ Woven in Kanchipuram over 16 days on the loom, using Silk Mark certified pure silk, by artisans who have handed this craft down through generations.

Individually placed perched-bird buttas are woven in warm gold zari across the richly coloured red silk body. Each motif has its own presence, with generous areas of uninterrupted silk between the designs. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 16 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: Fine intersecting gold zari lines form a checked register with tiny Nakshatram, or star-like, motifs, leading into an expansive lower border of closely woven flowers, curling vines and richly worked gold zari. A fine bottle-green selvedge finishes the edge against the brilliant red and warm gold.

Pallu: The pallu opens into an extensive field of richly patterned copper-gold zari, with a dense geometric grid and fine striped registers that continue the rhythm of the checked border.

Styling: Style with a fitted bottle-green blouse, elbow-length sleeves, a clean boat neckline and narrow red piping. Antique-gold jewellery and a softly pleated pallu allow the elaborate floral zari border to remain the focus.

Slight color variations due to screen and lighting; daylight photos/videos available on request.

What makes the three-motif design of this Kanchipuram saree special?
This saree brings together three ornamental compositions. Individually placed perched-bird buttas decorate the red silk body. Fine checks containing Nakshatram star motifs form an intermediate border, while an expansive floral-and-vine zari jaal fills the broad lower border. Together, they create a beautiful progression from simplicity to richly detailed weaving.
What are Nakshatram motifs in Kanchipuram weaving?
Nakshatram means star. In this saree, tiny star-like gold zari motifs appear within fine intersecting checked lines. Their repeated arrangement creates a delicate geometric rhythm between the open silk body and the elaborate floral border.
Is the floral zari jaal border Banarasi or Kanchipuram?
This is a Kanchipuram pure silk saree. Its richly detailed floral jaal border is Banarasi-inspired in appearance, combining closely woven flowers, curling vines and dense gold zari. This ornamental resemblance does not change the saree's Kanchipuram origin or Butta classification.
What colour is the blouse piece and how can it be styled?
The included 0.8-metre blouse piece is bottle-green silk with fine gold stripes. A tailored blouse with elbow-length sleeves, a simple boat neckline and narrow red piping beautifully complements the red saree. Antique-gold jewellery enhances the traditional colour combination.
What makes the gold zari pallu special?
The pallu features a richly woven copper-gold zari field with a dense geometric grid. Fine striped registers continue the checked detailing of the border, bringing visual continuity to the design. The substantial metallic weaving creates a warm, radiant finish that contrasts with the more open red silk body.
