Kumkum Red Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjivaram Saree with Kamalam Buttas and Mayil Border

Kumkum Red Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjivaram Saree with Kamalam Buttas and Mayil Border

A red with the clarity of freshly placed kumkum, vivid yet firmly rooted in the ceremonial palette of Kanchipuram. Scattered lotus-inspired kamalam buttas punctuate the smooth silk, while the Mayil border carries intricately arranged gold ornament. Unfurl the pallu and the surface gathers into a dense, glimmering field of woven zari.

❖ Made to order, not off a shelf. This saree spent roughly 16 active days on the loom, in addition to dyeing, threading and finishing.

Woven as a traditional Butta Kanchipuram, the silk body keeps its luminous kumkum-red ground visible between modestly spaced kamalam motifs. The delicate buttas stand in contrast to the more closely worked pallu, making the change in density a principal part of the design. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 16 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: The mayil, or peacock, border is worked in lustrous gold zari with a broad rhythmic register of stylised bird and floral ornament, held between finely drawn geometric bands. Red silk continues right through the ground of the border, lending the detailing a clear, glowing quality.

Pallu: An unusually dense zari pallu holds repeated small diamond and geometric lattice motifs with gold woven throughout. Adjacent floral and peacock-patterned registers and narrow stacked zari lines give it the brilliance of a carefully composed old-Kanchi panel.

Styling: For a wedding morning, pair the kumkum silk with a warm turmeric-gold blouse, short jhumkas and a long single-strand gold chain. A neat bun with fresh jasmine keeps the neckline open. For an evening gathering, a matching red blouse and darker antique-finish jewellery make the ornate pallu the centre of attention.

Occasions: An expressive choice for Diwali pujas, wedding rituals, temple celebrations and family ceremonies through the festive season.

Frequently bought together

What makes this a Butta Kanjivaram rather than a Zari Kattam saree?
Its named weave style is Butta because the red body is dotted with individual kamalam motifs. The pallu has a much denser geometric zari pattern, but that decorative change does not change the saree’s main classification.
Are the lotus buttas close together on this kumkum-red silk?
No. Small gold kamalam buttas are set apart across the red body, giving the saturated silk room to show between motifs. The zari becomes noticeably more concentrated at the border and pallu.
Would this red Mayil-border saree work for a wedding or Diwali puja?
The bright kumkum-red silk and richly patterned peacock border make it particularly well suited to celebratory ceremonies. Let the pallu fall open to show its dense gold geometry, or pleat it neatly for temple visits.
Can I choose a gold blouse rather than use the running piece?
Yes. The saree includes an unstitched 0.8 m running blouse piece, but a contrasting gold blouse is an optional styling choice. Idam Living can discuss a custom-stitched design using the available service.
Do handwoven kamalam motifs always appear identical?
Small differences in motif placement or yarn tension can occur in handwoven silk. Such minor variation is separate from actual damage, stains or major weaving defects, which should be assessed as quality issues.
