Kathiripoo Purple Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjivaram Saree with Mayil Chakram Buttas and Oodha Pink Border

Kathiripoo Purple Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjivaram Saree with Mayil Chakram Buttas and Oodha Pink Border

Like the violet petals of the Kathiripoo flower set beside a vivid blossom, this vintage Kanchipuram carries two lively shades without losing its traditional poise. The deep purple body is punctuated by small gold motifs, while an Oodha Pink edge introduces an unexpected brightness.

❖ Woven by hand in Kanchipuram over 14 days on the loom — a piece of a centuries-old weaving tradition, made with certified pure silk.

Woven in the Butta tradition, the flower-purple body carries spaced gold Mayil Chakram buttas, alternating small rounded chakram medallions with stylised peacock forms. The motifs appear in measured rows, so the vivid silk remains the main presence rather than the decoration. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 14 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: A narrow Oodha Pink silk border carries fine gold zari lines, rows of tiny pointed temple-like forms and delicate ornamental registers. Its saturated orchid-pink hue sets off the blue-toned purple without overwhelming the body.

Pallu: A rich Oodha Pink pallu filled with closely spaced gold zari diamond-grid jaal, floral centres and multiple geometric woven bands.

Styling: An Oodha Pink blouse with a clean round neckline echoes the contrast edge, while a deep Kathiripoo blouse keeps the look uninterrupted. Finish with gold jhumkas or a delicate stone necklace, a sleek bun and a small bindi. The woven border is striking enough without extra embroidery.

A striking choice for Navratri cultural programs, Vijayadashami celebrations, Diwali dinners and evening wedding events.

How are the Butta motifs arranged on this Kathiripoo saree?
Small gold Mayil Chakram motifs are placed at regular intervals across the purple body. The alternating circular and peacock forms make the pattern visible without covering the silk.
Is Oodha Pink the main saree colour?
No. The main body is a saturated Kathiripoo Purple with a cool violet undertone. Oodha Pink appears at the contrast border and in the richly decorated pallu.
Will the pink border remain noticeable after pleating?
Yes. The narrow Oodha Pink edge traces the lower line of the drape, while its fine gold work catches the light. It provides a defined contrast without the breadth of a large border.
What blouse colours can Idam Living suggest for this saree?
A same-tone purple blouse creates continuity; Oodha Pink repeats the border for a brighter effect. We can discuss sleeve length, neckline and embellishment choices through our custom blouse stitching service.
What does Silk Mark certification tell me?
Silk Mark relates to the authenticity of the silk used, not an endorsement of a particular colour or motif. Idam Living provides a link to its Silk Mark authorised-user certificate on the product page.
