Kaapi Brown Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Saree with Mayil Chakram Buttas and Mehendi Green Border

Kaapi Brown Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Saree with Mayil Chakram Buttas and Mehendi Green Border

For a family ceremony or a quiet festive evening, the deep Kaapi Brown of this vintage Kanchipuram silk has the warmth of freshly roasted coffee. A slender Mehendi Green edge sits against the brown like new leaves beside dark earth, while tiny golden motifs bring light to the silk.

❖ Handwoven in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu — this saree spent 14 days on the loom, woven by artisan families who have practiced this craft for generations.

Woven in the Butta tradition, its broad expanse of coffee-brown silk is dotted with spaced Mayil Chakram buttas. Alternating circular chakram forms and stylised mayil forms give the body a considered rhythm without crowding the colour. The main body is quiet, allowing its handwoven silk sheen to remain visible. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 14 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: A slim Mehendi Green and gleaming gold edge frames the deep brown body. Below its narrow green line, a refined gold zari band carries small ornamental floral and geometric work; the border reads as delicate rather than oversized.

Pallu: The pallu opens into an expansive golden zari field with closely repeated diamond-grid geometry, narrow floral registers and fine linear framing.

Styling: Choose a muted mehendi or deep brown elbow-sleeve blouse for an old-Kanchi look. An antique-gold temple necklace and small jhumkas bring out the woven gold without weighing down the silhouette. A centre-parted bun with jasmine, or simply a long braid, suits its earthy palette.

Especially suited to Vijayadashami gatherings, Diwali visits, temple ceremonies and intimate family celebrations.

What makes this a Butta Kanchipuram saree?
Its silk body is decorated with individual spaced zari motifs rather than a continuously covered field. Here the Mayil Chakram forms create a gentle repeating rhythm across Kaapi Brown silk.
What does Mayil Chakram look like on this saree?
The design alternates stylised peacock forms and small circular chakram medallions, each picked out in gold against the deep coffee-brown body. Their spacing lets the silk colour remain prominent.
How does the Mehendi Green border change the appearance of Kaapi Brown?
The slim leaf-green edge cools the roasted-brown tone while the gold woven band adds a warm highlight. Once pleated, the green acts as a discreet outline rather than a broad contrast panel.
Can Idam Living design a blouse around this vintage colour pairing?
Yes. A blouse in Mehendi Green, Kaapi Brown or antique gold can be discussed with our stitching team. Share your measurements and preferred neckline or sleeve references when requesting custom blouse stitching.
Are small variations normal in this handwoven saree?
Minor differences in yarn tension or individual zari motif placement can occur with handloom weaving. Stains, tears or significant damage are not considered normal handmade variation and should be raised with our team.
