Indigo and Ivory Check Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjivaram Kanchi Kattam Saree with Turquoise Border

Indigo and Ivory Check Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjivaram Kanchi Kattam Saree with Turquoise Border

The colour of monsoon skies reflected in a still lagoon: deep indigo meets little flashes of ivory in a beautifully disciplined checked field. The border is a sudden clearing of turquoise water, edged with the finest green lines like young shoots beside a canal.

❖ Woven in Kanchipuram over 28 days on the loom, using Silk Mark certified pure silk, by artisans who have handed this craft down through generations.

Kanchi Kattam is the traditional Kanchipuram checked silk weave. Here the tiny regular indigo-and-ivory squares create the distinctive rhythm, while the broad turquoise expanse and narrow gold-hued linear accents allow the eye to rest. The beauty lies in the precision of the checks rather than figurative buttas. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 28 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: Broad, clear turquoise silk borders give the blue-and-ivory body a restful frame. Just inside the edge, slender grass-green lines and restrained zari pinstripes introduce a fresh counterpoint to the check pattern.

Pallu: A sweeping lagoon-turquoise pallu carrying slim, repeated vertical zari stripes and subtly textured tonal silk sections; the spare linear composition balances the lively checked body.

Styling: Consider an ivory raw-silk blouse to echo the pale checks, or choose an indigo blouse with clean elbow-length sleeves. Silver-toned or lightly antiqued gold jewellery, a smooth low ponytail and simple sandals would make the precise geometry feel fresh for a daytime gathering.

Occasions: An appealing choice for Diwali house gatherings, cultural association lunches, music performances and relaxed family celebrations.

Frequently bought together

What does Kanchi Kattam mean in this saree?
Kattam refers to checks. The silk body is handwoven in a small-scale indigo-and-ivory checked pattern, distinct from a scattered butta design.
Does the bright turquoise section have the same checks as the body?
No. The turquoise border and pallu read as calmer silk fields, with subtle green edging and fine zari-striped details that contrast with the densely checked indigo body.
Would this blue and turquoise checked saree suit a daytime event?
The ivory highlights and open turquoise areas make the palette especially clear in daylight. It would work for a cultural lunch, family celebration or a music programme, styled with an ivory or indigo blouse.
Can I request a simple contemporary blouse for these checks?
Yes. Idam Living can discuss a custom blouse with clean sleeves and a restrained neckline to complement the graphic checks. Stitching is an optional service; the saree includes a running 0.8 m blouse piece.
Why might the tiny checks not look mathematically identical in every fold?
Handwoven silk can show subtle changes in yarn tension and alignment, especially in small repeating patterns. Natural handloom variation is different from stains, tears or an actual damage issue, which should be raised with Idam Living.
