Honey Brown Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjipuram Zari Kattam Saree with Mayil Yazhi Buttas and Arakku Border

Honey Brown Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjipuram Zari Kattam Saree with Mayil Yazhi Buttas and Arakku Border

Honey Brown silk glows like warm sunlight on old Kanchipuram temple stone, edged by the deep lacquer-red of Arakku. In this vintage Kanchipuram, the body pairs a fine zari-kattam grid with alternating Mayil and Yazhi motifs, while the stacked red-and-gold border brings a measured ceremonial richness.

❖ This saree carries 16 days of loom work behind it, handwoven in Kanchipuram by artisan families continuing a generations-old craft.

Woven in the Zari Kattam tradition, the honey-brown silk carries a fine rectangular zari-grid texture beneath alternating Mayil and Yazhi buttas. The small motifs are woven in gold across the body; their measured placement allows the checked sheen and honeyed base colour to show clearly. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 16 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: A sequence of slim Arakku Red, dark silk and gold zari rows is stacked at the lower edge. Narrow linear bands frame ornamental animal and floral registers, adding visual depth without letting a single broad strip overpower the body.

Pallu: A richly woven Arakku-and-gold pallu, with densely repeated golden geometric floral jaal framed by horizontal bands of figurative yali-like and ornamental motifs. The edge is finished with narrow red silk and gold fringe.

Styling: A deep Arakku blouse with gold piping returns to the border and makes the honeyed silk feel more traditional. For a softer look, a matte honey-brown blouse works beautifully with a short antique-gold necklace and ear studs. Keep the pallu open over the shoulder to show its tight zari pattern.

Ideal for Diwali pujas, special temple gatherings, wedding ceremonies and festive family photographs.

What is Zari Kattam in this honey-brown Kanjipuram?
Zari Kattam refers to a fine zari-grid structure in the silk body. On this saree, its close rectangular texture sits beneath the more widely separated gold Mayil and Yazhi motifs.
Are the Mayil and Yazhi buttas the same motif?
No. They are alternating traditional figurative forms. Mayil refers to a peacock, while Yazhi is a stylised creature familiar in South Indian decorative arts.
Why is the Arakku border made of several narrow layers?
Fine Arakku Red, dark silk and gold zari registers are stacked one above another. The repeated narrow bands create depth and guide the eye toward the richly woven pallu.
Could Idam Living stitch a blouse in Arakku Red?
An Arakku blouse would connect the dark red border to the overall look. Share your measurements and neckline or sleeve references; our team can discuss suitable custom stitching options.
What does Silk Mark certification establish?
Silk Mark provides assurance relating to silk authenticity. It does not certify that a particular Mayil or Yazhi motif has any special symbolic meaning or guarantee the composition of the zari.
