Vermilion Red Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjipuram Zari Kattam Saree with Dark Maroon Border

Vermilion Red Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjipuram Zari Kattam Saree with Dark Maroon Border

The red of glowing embers meets a deep arakku-maroon border in this richly patterned Kanchipuram. A close lattice of gold glints across the warm red body, while small traditional motifs and the densely brocaded pallu carry the stronger ceremonial character.

❖ Made to order, not off a shelf. This saree spent roughly 16 active days on the loom, in addition to dyeing, threading and finishing.

The Zari Kattam silk body is marked by a very fine gold-zari checked network across the vermilion-red ground. Along the adjoining near-black maroon silk bands, small Mayil Chakram buttas create a scattered gold rhythm before the denser border begins. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 16 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: This deep arakku-toned border is arranged in pronounced layers of traditional Kanchipuram pattern: narrow ruled lines, repeated geometric details, floral and curling brocade forms, and a large antique-gold register. The heavier dark frame gives the warm red an especially vivid presence.

Pallu: The maroon pallu has abundant vertical zari work, with repeated ornamental rows, flower-like round motifs and tightly ordered lines. Its intricate gold-on-dark composition provides a strong finish against the warmer checked body.

Styling: A plain deep arakku-maroon blouse will draw the border into the upper silhouette, while vermilion silk brings more colour to the drape. Finish with traditional gold studs or jhumkas, a slim chain and a low bun with fresh flowers so the dense pallu takes centre stage.

Occasions: Particularly apt for Diwali puja, Karthigai lamp-lighting gatherings, wedding ceremonies and family celebrations when a warm red silk is desired.

Frequently bought together

Is the red in this saree closer to bright red or a softer rust?
The checked silk is a warm vermilion-to-terracotta red rather than a cool crimson. Its deep arakku-maroon contrast appears almost black in some folds, giving the body a vivid border frame.
What is the relationship between the fine checks and the Mayil Chakram motifs?
The Zari Kattam checks form the close geometric texture of the red body. The small Mayil Chakram zari motifs are spaced along the adjoining dark maroon silk, providing a round ornamental contrast to the grid.
Would this saree be suitable for a Diwali puja or wedding?
The warm red silk, dark maroon contrast and abundant traditional gold work make it a strong choice for Diwali puja, wedding ceremonies and festive gatherings. A plain dark blouse keeps the border prominent.
Can I order blouse stitching and Fall & Pico together?
Yes. The saree includes a 0.8 m running blouse piece, custom blouse stitching is an optional add-on, and Fall & Picot finishing is complimentary. Discuss blouse design and any event deadline before ordering.
How should I care for the heavily worked zari pallu?
Dry clean only. Fold the saree into soft muslin, store it away from direct sunlight and avoid spraying perfume on the silk or zari. Refolding occasionally helps prevent long-standing fold stress.
