Cobalt Blue Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjivaram Zari Kattam Saree with Brown-Maroon Peacock Border

Cobalt Blue Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjivaram Zari Kattam Saree with Brown-Maroon Peacock Border

The strong blue of a clear evening sky finds its counterpoint in silk as dark as roasted areca nut. Between them, a fine grid of gold zari glimmers, while a parade of peacock medallions gives the broad contrast border its old-Kanchi grandeur.

❖ Made to order, not off a shelf. This saree spent roughly 16 active days on the loom, in addition to dyeing, threading and finishing.

Woven in the Zari Kattam tradition, the cobalt body carries a closely ordered gold-zari check rather than isolated all-over embroidery. Small Mayil Chakram buttas appear in the adjacent dark silk sections, creating a second, more spacious pattern beside the grid. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 16 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: The almost ink-dark brown-maroon border has a procession of circular peacock motifs in old-gold zari, enclosed by narrow horizontal registers and miniature geometric and floral detailing. Its colour recalls paaku, the rich brown of areca nut, deepened toward maroon.

Pallu: The pallu shifts decisively into the deep brown-maroon shade. A dense network of minute gold-zari diamonds runs across the principal field, with narrower decorated bands and repeated traditional roundels forming a richly layered finish.

Styling: A plain cobalt raw-silk blouse makes the blue the focus; a deep brown-maroon blouse offers a more traditional contrast. Consider antique-gold jhumkas, a single broad kada and neatly gathered pleats that show the round peacock medallions without competing accessories.

Occasions: The dramatic contrast suits evening wedding receptions, Diwali celebrations, temple cultural programs and formal gatherings throughout the festive season.

Frequently bought together

How does the Zari Kattam pattern read against this bright blue silk?
The fine gold lines cross in an ordered grid over the cobalt-blue body. It reads as a restrained gleam from a distance and as closely spaced checks when viewed more closely.
What is special about the dark contrast border?
The brown-maroon border is substantially broader than a narrow zari edging. Its rows of circular peacock medallions, geometric separators and gold work form a strong visual frame around the blue silk.
Is this more suited to an evening wedding or a daytime event?
The cobalt and almost-black maroon contrast is especially expressive for an evening reception, when the gold-zari border becomes prominent. It can also be worn to daytime temple or cultural gatherings with restrained jewellery.
Can I request a simple blouse when the saree border is this elaborate?
Yes. Idam Living can discuss a custom blouse in plain cobalt, deep maroon or another colour you prefer. Keeping the neckline and sleeves clean allows the dense peacock-border work to remain the focus.
How can I protect the dark silk and zari in storage?
Dry clean only, and store the saree folded in soft muslin away from direct sunlight. Refold it periodically, keep perfume off the zari and avoid long-term storage in plastic.
