Deep Plum Handwoven Pure Silk Kancheepuram Korvai Saree with Turquoise Zari Border and Veldhari Lines

Deep Plum Handwoven Pure Silk Kancheepuram Korvai Saree with Turquoise Zari Border and Veldhari Lines

A plum-dark twilight sky above a turquoise river. The rich, almost blackened jamun body carries delicate glimmering lines like distant rain across the horizon; the bright blue-green silk border arrives with the clear light of water, full of finely woven gold.

❖ Made to order, not off a shelf. This saree spent roughly 20 active days on the loom, in addition to dyeing, threading and finishing.

In Korvai weaving, the sharply contrasting body and border are structurally interlocked to make the change of colour decisive. A secondary Veldhari rhythm runs over the body in slender, horizontal gold-zari bands. Their measured spacing offers a calm foil to the more intricate turquoise brocade. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 20 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: A strongly contrasted turquoise Korvai border finished in substantial handwoven gold-zari registers, with scrolling floral elements, leafy tracery, small geometric cells and ornamental medallion-like shapes. The turquoise serves as a bright water-coloured frame to the dusky body.

Pallu: An expansive turquoise pallu densely worked with shimmering gold-zari geometry: interlocking small diamonds, fine floral rounds, precise bands and contrasting selvedge detailing.

Styling: A turquoise blouse brings out the border’s cool light; alternatively, a deep plum blouse keeps the silhouette continuous. Try small antique-gold jhumkas, a single wide cuff and jasmine tucked into a chignon. Leave the pallu open over the shoulder to show its small-scale zari architecture.

Occasions: A strong festive choice for Diwali, Karthigai Deepam gatherings, formal receptions and community cultural evenings.

How does Korvai differ from a simple colour-change saree?
Korvai is a traditional Kanchipuram construction in which the contrasting silk border is interlocked with the body. In this saree, the plum-to-turquoise distinction is an important part of the design.
What are the repeated gold lines across the plum body?
They form the Veldhari treatment, a sequence of horizontal zari bands. The fine lines give quiet movement to the deep plum silk without competing with the richly ornamented turquoise border.
Does the turquoise pallu carry more detail than the body?
Yes. The pallu is densely patterned with fine gold-zari diamonds and decorative registers, while the plum field relies on spaced horizontal lines. The contrast becomes especially visible when the pallu is spread over the shoulder.
Can Idam Living design a blouse in the turquoise contrast colour?
You can discuss a turquoise blouse, sleeve treatment and neckline with Idam Living through its optional custom blouse-stitching service. A 0.8 m running blouse piece accompanies the saree; its precise appearance is not separately established here.
What is the recommended way to care for the dense gold-zari pallu?
Dry clean only. After wearing, allow the silk to air in shade, then fold it in soft muslin and periodically change the fold lines. Keep perfume away from the silk and zari.
