Deep Plum — A Study in Shadow and Gold
Like the velvety darkness of a ripe jamun beneath a moonlit sky, this extraordinary Kanchipuram carries an almost mysterious beauty. Its deep plum silk is touched by blackened aubergine and rich brown undertones, while traditional antique-gold zari glows with the warmth of old temple jewellery. The composition is commanding, yet wonderfully refined.

Rettapet frames the deep plum body with twin parallel bands carrying Gandaberunda-inspired motifs, with scattered gold buttas and a pallu of fine parallel zari lines. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 18 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.
The Body — A Constellation of Golden Motifs
The silk body is an expansive field of dark, lustrous plum, scattered with beautifully woven gold zari buttas. Their delicate placement offers a graceful counterpoint to the richness of the colour, resembling tiny golden blossoms illuminated against a night sky.
With each change of light, the smooth Kanchipuram silk reveals subtle variations between deep aubergine, blackened purple and warm brown, adding remarkable depth to an otherwise restrained body.
The Rettapet Border — Heritage in Twin Lines
The traditional Rettapet design is distinguished by its paired border structure, with two distinctly arranged bands running in parallel along the saree. This carefully balanced composition creates a beautifully architectural frame for the body.
The principal ornamental bands feature richly woven Gandaberunda-inspired motifs, together with small traditional forms and detailed geometric zari lines. The Gandaberunda, the magnificent mythical double-headed bird associated with strength and regal South Indian iconography, lends the border an unusual and memorable character.
Finely repeated gold elements, narrow decorative bands and broad sections of dark silk are arranged in a manner that allows every part of the composition to remain visible and distinct.
The Pallu — Golden Lines in Perfect Rhythm
The pallu is exceptionally graceful, with numerous fine antique-gold zari lines travelling in parallel through the deep plum silk. A central ornamental column and a richly patterned end border add depth and definition to the design.
The rhythmic movement of gold against dark silk creates a pallu that feels both elaborately considered and wonderfully restrained. Its beauty emerges in the precision of the weave rather than excess ornamentation.
Styling Notes
Choose a fitted deep plum silk blouse with narrow gold piping for an elegant tonal look. For a stronger contrast, a muted antique-gold blouse with a high neckline or elbow-length sleeves would be exquisite. Pair with an antique-gold necklace, traditional jhumkas or a single sculptural statement piece.
Particularly suited for evening weddings, Deepavali gatherings, temple celebrations, Karthigai Deepam, cultural performances, winter receptions and formal family occasions.
