Deep Kaapi Brown Handwoven Pure Silk Kancheepuram Saree with Mayil Chakram Rettapet Border

Deep Kaapi Brown Handwoven Pure Silk Kancheepuram Saree with Mayil Chakram Rettapet Border

The silk has the depth of freshly ground kaapi, with a muted plum cast that appears and recedes as it folds. Against this warm, shadowed ground, little gold Mayil Chakram motifs resemble lamps set along a long evening corridor.

❖ Woven in Kanchipuram over 18 days on the loom, using Silk Mark certified pure silk, by artisans who have handed this craft down through generations.

Woven as Rettapet, the border is arranged in double gold zari registers with a quieter silk interval between them. The body remains a deep kaapi brown with a subtle plum-brown undertone, strewn with small Mayil Chakram buttas. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 18 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: The broad gold bands carry a plume-like Thogai Mayil vocabulary with dense ornamental weaving and slim guiding lines. Because the central section stays within the same deep coffee family, the zari looks almost burnished against the silk.

Pallu: The pallu opens into layered gold stripes, alternating fine graphic lines with elaborate patterned bands and a broad textured field. Its striped arrangement is striking against the almost aubergine darkness of the coffee-brown silk.

Styling: Pair with a copper-gold blouse or match the deep kaapi body for an understated reception look. Oxidised antique-gold jewellery and a soft braid would suit this warmly shaded silk; a narrow gold-bordered blouse sleeve would make the layered Rettapet especially coherent.

Occasions: A natural choice for Diwali evenings, autumn weddings, intimate celebrations and winter family gatherings.

What makes the colour of this Kaapi Brown saree unusual?
The base is a very deep roasted-coffee brown with a plum-brown undertone in some folds. It remains a brown saree, but the cooler depth gives the antique gold border extra contrast.
Are the Mayil Chakram motifs part of the body or the border?
The small Mayil Chakram buttas are spaced across the body. The border is handled differently, with richer feather-plumage-inspired Thogai Mayil work and repeated golden bands.
What does the double zari band add to the drape?
The two gold registers frame the coffee-coloured silk in layers. They create a clear line along the pleats and lead the eye naturally towards the more elaborately striped pallu.
Could this be styled without heavy jewellery?
Yes. A matching coffee-brown or quiet copper-gold blouse and one pair of antique-gold earrings would let the zari speak. Idam Living can also discuss a custom blouse design using your measurements and references.
How is the saree cared for after a celebration?
Air it away from direct sunlight before storing. Dry clean only and keep it folded in soft muslin; perfume should never be sprayed directly on the silk or zari.
