Deep Chocolate Brown Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Butta Saree with Mayil Chakram and Ganga Jamuna Border

Deep Chocolate Brown Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Butta Saree with Mayil Chakram and Ganga Jamuna Border

Deep chocolate brown gives this saree its old-Kanchi depth, while the two border colours pull it in opposite directions: Vadamalli magenta on one side and emerald green on the other. The gold zari sits between them like a warm connecting note.

❖ Made to order, not off a shelf. This saree spent roughly 16 active days on the loom, in addition to dyeing, threading and finishing.

Woven as a Butta Kanchipuram, the body alternates Mayil and Chakram zari motifs across a dark chocolate field. The Ganga Jamuna treatment is secondary to the Butta classification and gives the two edges deliberately different colour identities. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 16 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: Ganga Jamuna border treatment with contrasting Vadamalli-magenta and emerald-green edges, both supported by warm gold zari.

Pallu: Vadamalli-magenta pallu with a dense gold zari diamond lattice, ornate vertical zari framing and a slim emerald-green edge.

Styling: Keep the blouse solid so the Ganga Jamuna contrast remains visible. Vadamalli makes the look richer; emerald green makes it more traditional. Kemp jewellery or antique gold, a centre-parted bun and jasmine suit the vintage Kanchipuram character especially well.

Occasion: Beautiful for Navratri, Deepavali, Karthigai Deepam, temple programs, classical performances, winter weddings and heirloom-style family occasions.

What makes this a Butta Kanchipuram even though it has a Ganga Jamuna border?
Butta is the primary classification because the body is organised around spaced zari motifs. The Ganga Jamuna treatment describes the contrasting colour treatment at the two borders and does not replace the body classification.
What motifs appear on the chocolate-brown body?
The body alternates Mayil and Chakram gold zari buttas, giving the dark silk a measured traditional rhythm.
What does Ganga Jamuna mean on this saree?
It refers here to the two borders carrying different contrast colours. One edge reads Vadamalli-magenta and the other emerald green, creating the characteristic opposed-border effect.
How would you style this vintage Kanchipuram colour combination?
Choose either Vadamalli or emerald green for the blouse, then keep the jewellery traditional. Kemp or antique gold works especially well with the chocolate-brown body and warm zari.
Why can the silk look slightly different in photographs and in person?
Pure mulberry silk changes with light and angle, especially in deep shades. The chocolate, magenta and green may therefore read warmer or cooler between daylight, indoor light and different screens.
