Deep Chilli Red Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjipuram Rettapet Saree with Bavanji Zari Border

Deep Chilli Red Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjipuram Rettapet Saree with Bavanji Zari Border

As rich as a sun-dried chilli yet softened by a trace of hibiscus-petal pink, this is red with remarkable depth. Petite gold buttas sit far apart on the body, allowing its pink undertone to come through in the folds. At the edge, an expansive Bavanji-patterned border takes over in lustrous gold, while the intricately covered pallu gives the saree a second, more elaborate face.

❖ Made to order, not off a shelf. This saree spent roughly 18 active days on the loom, in addition to dyeing, threading and finishing.

The Rettapet construction gives this deep chilli-red Kanjipuram its traditional paired-border organisation. Its small, spaced golden buttas provide measured ornamentation on the silk body, while the wide zari border and crowded pallu create a dramatic change of scale. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 18 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: A dense Bavanji-patterned gold zari border is built from broad gleaming fields, tightly worked decorative panels and multiple fine line registers. The saturated chilli-red silk and petal-pink undertone frame the gold on either side, making this old-Kanchi border particularly clear in pleats.

Pallu: A densely patterned zari pallu is filled with tight repeated gold geometric and circular motifs. Long parallel zari stripes and a broad, burnished gold section provide contrast, with the deep red silk appearing as a fine framing line around the woven expanse.

Styling: For a festival evening, choose a silk blouse in a deeper rose-red and a single long antique-gold necklace. A short-sleeved plain blouse lets the generous Bavanji border remain the focus. Try a low knot with fresh flowers and small gold jhumkas; for a daytime event, exchange the necklace for one finely worked pair of earrings.

Occasions: Especially apt for Diwali visits, Karthigai celebrations, wedding festivities, winter family occasions and Pongal gatherings in January.

Frequently bought together

How does the Rettapet border differ from the Butta body in this red saree?
The red silk body has small isolated gold buttas, while the Rettapet border brings together wider, more concentrated ornamental bands. This contrast keeps the plain colour visible when worn, but provides richness at the pleats and hem.
What is distinctive about the Bavanji border here?
This piece uses the traditional Bavanji border name for a densely woven, broad gold zari treatment. Numerous fine line registers frame the richer ornamental field, creating a layered edge rather than one flat band of zari.
Does the deep chilli red have a visible pink undertone?
Yes. Its main colour is deep chilli red, with a subtle petal-pink cast that can be clearer in bright light and along folds. It should not be confused with a plain scarlet red; screen settings can change its appearance.
Could Idam Living stitch a rose-toned blouse to complement this saree?
The team can discuss a custom blouse design and a suitable rose-red or deep red fabric selection. There is also an included 0.8 m running blouse piece; its exact colour and design are not separately specified in the product record.
How can I arrange shipping in the USA if I need blouse stitching too?
Standard USA shipping is free under Idam Living’s current baseline policy. Express shipping is available where applicable for an additional charge; blouse stitching and finishing can affect the dispatch schedule, so contact the team with your event date before relying on a delivery window.
