Deep Brown Handwoven Pure Silk Kancheepuram Saree with Malli Moggu Buttas and Thirushnam Orange Pallu

Deep Brown Handwoven Pure Silk Kancheepuram Saree with Malli Moggu Buttas and Thirushnam Orange Pallu

A dark, rain-cloud brown made almost inky by its black weft, suddenly lifted by the vivid Thirushnam Orange of a Kanchipuram temple marigold. The contrast is bold yet spare: small gold strokes cross the silk body like the first fine lines of rain.

❖ 14 days on the loom, handwoven in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu by artisan weaver families — every purchase supports their village and this centuries-old tradition.

Woven in the Butta tradition, the near-black Kanchana deep brown body carries fine, elongated gold zari buttas described as raindrop or Malli Moggu motifs. Their slender spacing keeps the silk largely open and gives the design a modern clarity despite its traditional vocabulary. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 14 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: The dark body is lightly outlined by fine horizontal gold lines and a narrow reddish-pink accent at its edge, letting the sudden arrival of Thirushnam Orange remain the focus rather than using a broad decorative body border.

Pallu: A generous, vividly luminous Thirushnam Orange pallu with slender horizontal gold zari stripes, broad tonal sheen bands and visible black-and-orange tassels.

Styling: The dramatic orange pallu invites a matching Thirushnam Orange blouse with simple tailored sleeves. A deep brown blouse gives a quieter alternative. Try warm gold studs, a short chain and an unfussy knot or braid; the long raindrop buttas provide all the surface movement needed.

Suitable for contemporary Diwali gatherings, evening classical performances and intimate wedding celebrations.

What are Malli Moggu buttas on this saree?
Malli Moggu refers to a slender bud-inspired motif. On this deep brown body, the fine elongated gold buttas also resemble little strokes of falling rain.
Why does the brown silk look almost black?
The body combines deep Kanchana Brown with a dark black weft, creating a close-to-black visual depth. The result is warmer than a flat black but deliberately restrained.
Is the Thirushnam Orange colour on the body or the pallu?
The main body remains dark brown. The brilliant orange appears on the contrasting pallu, with fine gold lines and dark tassels visible in the supplied views.
Could I choose a contemporary blouse for this contrast?
An orange blouse creates a deliberate colour-blocked look; a dark brown blouse leaves the pallu as the main contrast. Idam Living can discuss a pared-back custom blouse using measurements and references you share.
How should I store a pure silk saree with zari?
Dry clean only, and store it folded in a soft muslin cloth away from direct sunlight. Avoid spraying perfume directly on the silk or zari, and refold it periodically to reduce permanent fold lines.
