Deep Brown Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Saree with Bottle Green Rettapet Border

Deep Brown Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Saree with Bottle Green Rettapet Border

At first glance this silk holds the stillness of an unlit temple corridor. Move it towards the light and golden Mayil Chakram buttas emerge from the deep brown body, while the bottle-green Rettapet glows like rain-dark leaves edged in gold.

❖ Handwoven in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu. This saree spent 18 days on the loom, woven by artisan families who have practiced this craft for generations.

In the Rettapet tradition, twin richly woven zari registers frame a quiet bottle-green channel. Across the deep brown body, small Mayil Chakram buttas sit with ample space between them, allowing the border to hold its architectural weight. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 18 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: The double zari bands carry an ornate Thogai Mayil feather-plumage treatment, set around a restrained bottle-green silk band. The dark green selvedge lends the gold a sharp, clean finish as each pleat falls.

Pallu: Gold lines sweep down the dark pallu in stacked sequences: narrow stripes, intricate patterned runs and a broad, densely worked panel. The alternating widths give the pallu a rhythmic, column-like quality.

Styling: Choose a bottle-green blouse with fine gold piping, antique-gold jhumkas and a low knot of jasmine for a temple evening. For a reception, a deep brown silk blouse and one sculptural gold neckpiece would let the green and golden borders remain the centre of the look.

Occasions: Especially suited to Navratri evenings, Diwali dinners, winter weddings and classical music performances.

What gives this Rettapet saree its double-border character?
Rettapet uses two distinct border registers to frame the saree. In this deep brown colourway, the gold zari bands enclose a bottle-green section, so the border reads in deliberate layers when the pleats are gathered.
Where do the Mayil Chakram buttas appear?
Small Mayil Chakram motifs are spaced across the deep brown body. Their gold finish stands apart from the silk, while the more elaborate Thogai Mayil work is concentrated in the Rettapet border.
Does the green change how the saree looks when worn?
Yes. The bottle-green band remains a deep, quiet contrast against the deep brown body, while gold zari frames it along the hem. The overall impression is dark and composed rather than brightly multicoloured.
Could Idam design a blouse around the bottle-green border?
Idam Living can discuss custom blouse stitching using your measurements and design references. A bottle-green blouse with narrow gold details would echo the border; the 0.8 m running blouse piece is included, but its separate colour and design are not specified here.
How should I protect the gold zari between wears?
Dry clean only, then store the saree folded in soft muslin away from direct sunlight. Avoid spraying perfume directly onto the silk or zari and change the fold lines periodically.
