Deep Aubergine Floral Jaal Pure Silk Kanchipuram Saree with Gold Peacock & Yazhi Border

Deep Aubergine Floral Jaal Pure Silk Kanchipuram Saree with Gold Peacock & Yazhi Border

An extraordinarily rich, near-black aubergine silk, somewhere between the skin of a ripe jamun and the dark wine-brown shadows of temple stone at dusk. Across this moody ground runs an all-over floral jaal: generous chrysanthemum-like blossoms unfurl along scrolling stems, tiny leaves and curling tendrils, all picked out in warm antique-gold zari. The floral lattice is expressive rather than crowded, allowing the silk to hold the eye while the gold catches the light.

❖ This saree carries 16 days of loom work behind it, handwoven in Kanchipuram by artisan families continuing a generations-old craft.

This handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram brings together the bold silhouettes of South Indian temple imagery and the luxuriant floral jaal associated with Banarasi design. A study in contrast, its ornate zari work gives the saree a richly ceremonial character without confusing the textile traditions from which its influences are drawn. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 16 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: The broad gold border is deliberately architectural: a gleaming expanse of zari rises into layered, stacked friezes of peacocks, Yazhi and ornamental floral forms. The sculptural animal motifs and scrolling relief-like patterns bring to mind the carved corridors and temple pillars of Kanchipuram, while its lavish floral treatment lends it a Banarasi-inspired sensibility. A fine aubergine selvage frames the gold.

Pallu: The richly woven pallu opens in deep aubergine-plum, structured by a grand zari grid and traditional peacock-and-Yazhi ornamentation. Ornamental zari panels and a weight of antique gold create a magnificent closing flourish, balanced against the densely flowered body.

Styling: Style with an antique-gold tissue or brocade silk blouse, or choose a deep aubergine raw-silk blouse with restrained gold piping. A high or jewel neckline, elbow-length sleeves and an intricate but narrow sleeve border let the dramatic border remain the hero. Finish with temple jewellery, antique-gold jhumkas and a low bun softened with jasmine.

Occasions: An exceptionally elegant choice for an evening wedding, wedding reception, Karthigai Deepam gathering, Margazhi concert, temple celebration or Diwali dinner. The shadowy plum and gold palette feels especially beautiful after sunset.

What makes this Kanchipuram saree distinctive?
The deep aubergine body carries an all-over gold floral jaal, while its broad double-tier border features peacock, Yazhi and floral motifs. The ornate pallu combines a traditional zari grid with heritage motifs.
Is this a Banarasi saree or a Kanchipuram saree?
It is a Pure Silk Kanchipuram saree. The densely woven floral jaal and lavish brocade-like border are Banarasi-inspired design influences, not a claim that the saree was woven in Banaras.
What are the body, border and pallu details?
Body: An extraordinarily rich, near-black aubergine silk, somewhere between the skin of a ripe jamun and the dark wine-brown shadows of temple stone at dusk. Across this moody ground runs an all-over floral jaal: generous chrysanthemum-like blossoms unfurl along scrolling stems, tiny leaves and curling tendrils, all picked out in warm antique-gold zari. How would you style this saree?
Style with an antique-gold tissue or brocade silk blouse, or choose a deep aubergine raw-silk blouse with restrained gold piping. A high or jewel neckline, elbow-length sleeves and an intricate but narrow sleeve border let the dramatic border remain the hero. Finish with temple jewellery, antique-gold jhumkas and a low bun softened with jasmine.
What care does this handwoven silk need?
Professional dry cleaning is recommended. Store in a clean breathable cotton or muslin wrap, refold occasionally and keep away from prolonged direct sunlight. Subtle handloom variation is a characteristic of weaving, not automatically a defect.
