Deep Arakku — The Quiet Splendour of Earth and Gold

Rich as the bark of an ancient rosewood tree after rain, this Kanchipuram is a study in beautifully restrained grandeur. Its deep Arakku-brown body carries undertones of dark burgundy and ripened plum, while antique-gold zari glows against the silk like warm sunlight falling upon old bronze. There is a timeless serenity to this palette, recalling the carved wooden doors, polished stone and gold-lit sanctums of South Indian temples.

❖ This piece took 18 days on the loom to weave in Kanchipuram — handwoven by artisan families whose generational skill keeps this heritage tradition alive.

Rettapet frames the deep Arakku-brown body with two parallel woven bands, with scattered Mayil and Kamalam-inspired gold buttas and a densely patterned floral zari pallu. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 18 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

The Body — A Whisper of Gold

The smooth pure silk body is woven in a wonderfully deep reddish brown, with subtle wine-dark plum undertones. Small gold zari Mayil and Kamalam-inspired buttas are scattered across the silk, each one adding a delicate point of light to the richly coloured ground.

The space between the motifs is equally beautiful, allowing the natural radiance, depth and texture of the Kanchipuram silk to remain the focus.

The Rettapet Border — Two Lines, One Beautiful Tradition

Rettapet, from the Tamil idea of a double border, is distinguished by two distinct parallel woven bands that frame the body. The paired arrangement gives the saree its characteristic architectural clarity, creating a beautiful dialogue between ornamented gold zari and quiet silk.

Here, intricate Kamalam-inspired floral motifs occupy the ornamental band, while fine gold lines, geometric textures and rows of small decorative elements provide definition. A broad expanse of deep Arakku silk separates the gold treatments, allowing each carefully woven band to stand distinctly on its own.

The result is elegant rather than excessive — a wonderful example of how traditional Kanchipuram border construction can create richness through balance and precision.

The Pallu — A Golden Floral Canopy

The elaborate pallu reveals a glowing antique-gold field of closely repeated floral forms, forming a dense, almost brocade-like surface. The small motifs appear like hundreds of blossoms gathered together, their golden edges catching the light as the silk moves.

Framing the principal zari field are traditional ornamental panels and meticulously ordered golden bands. Together, they give the pallu a beautiful heirloom character.

Styling Notes

Pair with a dark Arakku silk blouse for a beautifully understated monochromatic look. For a more festive interpretation, choose antique-gold tissue silk or muted copper silk with a narrow traditional neckline. A vintage gold necklace, small temple jhumkas and a neatly gathered bun would be particularly graceful.

Beautiful for intimate wedding ceremonies, Deepavali evenings, traditional temple visits, Karthigai Deepam celebrations, naming ceremonies, family anniversaries and elegant festive dinners.
