Coffee Bean Brown Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Rettapet Saree with Mayil Zari Border

Coffee Bean Brown Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Rettapet Saree with Mayil Zari Border

Deep as roasted coffee beans in a brass dabara, this Kanchipuram silk rests in a rich, near-cacao brown, warmed by a quiet red-earth undertone. Each small kamalam butta catches the light before the eye travels to an expansive pair of peacock-woven zari registers. The colour makes its own case for festive dressing, without asking to be bright.

❖ Made to order, not off a shelf. This saree spent roughly 18 active days on the loom, in addition to dyeing, threading and finishing.

Woven in the Rettapet tradition, the saree is distinguished by its layered double-border arrangement against an open, sparsely butta-strewn silk body. Petite kamalam, or lotus-inspired, zari buttas are distributed across the coffee-brown field, giving the Mayil-rich border room to be admired. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 18 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: A broad, richly worked antique-gold Mayil (peacock) border is organised in paired ornamental registers, interspersed with precise miniature geometric and floral seer detailing. The peacocks sit against the same coffee-bean ground, so the zari, not a contrasting silk colour, gives the edge its brilliance.

Pallu: The seer pallu unfolds in long, closely ordered gold zari stripes and narrow patterned bands. An adjoining dense gold-woven ornamental panel and traditional selvedge framing make it particularly striking when worn open across the shoulder.

Styling: Try a plain antique-gold tissue blouse or a deep coffee silk blouse with elbow sleeves. Add a single temple-style pendant, softly burnished gold bangles and a low braid. Keep the pallu open at a family wedding, temple celebration or a classical music evening so that the parallel seer lines remain visible.

Occasions: Particularly suited to Diwali gatherings in November, Karthigai Deepam, winter wedding ceremonies and the December classical music season.

What gives this coffee-brown saree its Rettapet identity?
Rettapet refers to a traditional double-border arrangement. In this piece, two richly woven ornamental registers frame the coffee-bean silk while the small kamalam buttas leave much of the body visually open.
What motifs appear in its Mayil border and on the body?
The border has woven Mayil, or peacock, ornament in antique-gold zari. Small kamalam, or lotus-inspired, buttas are spaced across the deep brown body; the long zari stripes belong to the seer pallu.
Which blouse and jewellery work with this deep kaapi brown?
A quiet antique-gold blouse brings forward the zari, while a matching deep-brown silk blouse creates a softer monochrome look. A pair of temple earrings or one substantial gold pendant is usually enough beside the detailed border.
Can Idam Living stitch a blouse for this saree?
Yes. A 0.8 m running blouse piece comes with the 6.3 m saree, and custom blouse stitching can be added as a separate service. The design and neckline can be discussed before stitching; the piece’s exact colour and pattern have not been separately documented.
How should I store the double zari border after wearing it?
Dry clean only and allow the saree to air in shade before refolding. Store it in soft muslin away from sunlight, changing the folds periodically so that the same zari edge does not remain sharply creased for long.
