Chocolate Brown and Deep Arakku Red Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Varisaipet Saree with Yaanai Ambari Buttas

Chocolate Brown and Deep Arakku Red Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Varisaipet Saree with Yaanai Ambari Buttas

Chocolate brown, the shade of rain-darkened bark and paaku, meets the depth of arakku red in a Kanchipuram silk made for a quietly grand entrance. Gold motifs rise gently from the dark body, while the border recalls the ornamented gateways of old temple streets.

❖ Made to order, not off a shelf. This saree spent roughly 16 active days on the loom, in addition to dyeing, threading and finishing.

Woven in the Varisaipet tradition, this saree builds its character through a succession of gold-bordered registers rather than a single uninterrupted band. The chocolate-brown body is dotted with Yaanai Ambari buttas, its small ceremonial elephants catching the light without crowding the silk. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 16 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: A deep arakku-red frame carries repeated zari stripes and ornate Sorgavasal-inspired arch panels, alongside peacock and Yazhi imagery. These alternating broad and narrow bands lend the drape a measured, architectural rhythm.

Pallu: The pallu opens into rich red and gold panels of Kanchipuram ornament, with multiple registers of motifs and zari linework that echo the layered border.

Styling: Pair it with a plain deep-red silk blouse or a tonal chocolate-brown blouse with a restrained gold cuff. Antique-gold earrings and a low knot of jasmine keep the focus on the ornate border. Especially lovely for a Deepavali evening, a family wedding or a temple celebration.

Frequently bought together

What does Varisaipet mean in this chocolate-brown Kanchipuram?
Varisaipet describes the ordered rows of ornament and bands that frame the silk. Here, the deep-red border places narrow zari lines beside larger figurative panels, so the border has depth even when pleated.
Which traditional motifs appear on the body and border?
The chocolate-brown body carries Yaanai Ambari elephant buttas in gold zari. The border includes Sorgavasal-inspired framing with peacock and Yazhi ornament, set in a sequence of red-and-gold registers.
How would you style the chocolate brown with the deep red?
A plain arakku-red blouse makes the contrast deliberate, while a brown silk blouse creates a more continuous silhouette. Antique-gold jewellery works beautifully with the measured gold on the border.
Can Idam Living design a blouse around the red border?
Idam Living offers custom blouse stitching, including guidance on sleeves, neckline and contrast fabrics. This saree includes a 0.8 m running blouse piece; any placement of border elements depends on the fabric available and the chosen design.
How should I preserve the red and gold zari after wearing it?
Dry clean only, air the saree gently after wear, then store it folded in soft muslin away from direct sunlight. Avoid perfume directly on the silk or zari, and refold periodically to protect the creases.
