Aubergine Purple Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjeevaram Rettapet Saree with Gandaberunda Border

Aubergine Purple Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjeevaram Rettapet Saree with Gandaberunda Border

The purple of an aubergine blossom at evening, deeper in the folds and quietly radiant wherever the silk meets the light. Small gold buttas are scattered over the open ground, while a remarkable Gandaberunda border introduces powerful bird forms within a dense, flowering gold framework. The finished impression is graphic, traditional and beautifully restrained in colour.

❖ Made to order, not off a shelf. This saree spent roughly 18 active days on the loom, in addition to dyeing, threading and finishing.

Woven in the Rettapet manner, this deep aubergine Kanjeevaram places two ornate border registers alongside a spacious silk body scattered with small gold buttas. The composition sets a strong band of figurative gold work against broad stretches of purple, rather than crowding the entire saree with motifs. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 18 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: The expansive gold zari Rettapet border features Gandaberunda bird motifs within a field of scrolling floral and leaf ornament. Fine narrow registers of zari geometry and floral detailing frame the central band, giving the purple silk an almost architectural edge when pleated.

Pallu: The seer-style pallu sets closely ordered vertical gold zari stripes beside broad, richly woven ornamental bands, including elongated traditional decorative panels. Their measured spacing creates a long, stately rhythm across the shoulder.

Styling: Choose a subdued old-gold silk blouse or a fully matching aubergine blouse with a high round neckline. A matte-gold choker, small pearl drops and a braided bun keep the detailed Gandaberunda border in focus. A carefully pinned open pallu works especially well at a concert or evening ceremony.

Occasions: Suited to Diwali gatherings, Karthigai Deepam, wedding receptions and the winter season of Carnatic music and classical dance.

What does Rettapet mean in this aubergine Kanjeevaram?
Rettapet describes a traditional paired or double-register border treatment. The strong gold bands at the edge frame this dark purple silk while the body remains comparatively open and dotted with small buttas.
What is unusual about the Gandaberunda border on this purple silk?
The border uses Gandaberunda bird imagery within broad, intricately woven gold zari and flowering scrollwork. The combination of figurative motif and repeated narrow bands gives the border presence without requiring a second body colour.
Will the purple look almost black in evening lighting?
It is a deep aubergine purple, so shaded folds may appear darker than the illuminated body. Warm light also makes the antique-gold zari more noticeable; ask for daylight photographs or a video if you need to assess the shade before ordering.
Can Idam Living make a simpler blouse to balance the ornate border?
Yes. A plain purple or old-gold blouse with a clean neckline is a sensible option for this richly bordered saree. The saree includes a 0.8 m running piece, and a custom blouse can be discussed as a separate service.
Should I expect minor handloom variation in the small body buttas?
Small differences in yarn tension, spacing or individual woven details can occur in handloom silk. They are not equivalent to tears, stains or significant weaving defects, which should be addressed as quality concerns.
