Deep Arakku Maroon Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjeevaram Zari Kattam Saree

Deep Arakku Maroon Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjeevaram Zari Kattam Saree

Deep as arakku lacquer and the red earth after rain, this maroon silk has an old-Kanchi gravity that feels beautifully at home among brass lamps and jasmine. Fine gold kattam lines and small kamalam flowers rise from the dark body, while a narrow kesari-orange edge makes the whole palette glow.

❖ This piece took 16 days on the loom to weave in Kanchipuram. Handwoven by artisan families whose generational skill keeps this heritage tradition alive.

Woven in the Zari Kattam tradition, the rich arakku-maroon silk is overlaid with an exacting fine Zari Kattam lattice. Petite kamalam lotus buttas sit widely and evenly within the field, breaking the discipline of the checks with quiet floral points. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 16 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: Gold yaanai, mayil and vanam-inspired botanical forms repeat within an ornate band. A run of narrow Veldhari stripes builds a measured Varisaipet effect beside it; at the outermost edge, a vivid kesari-orange selvedge draws a clean, warming line against the deep maroon.

Pallu: A substantial antique-gold-looking zari pallu carries closely woven floral and geometric motifs, broader pattern registers and fine linework that gather the colour into a ceremonial finish.

Styling: Wear it with a deep arakku blouse and antique temple jewellery for an evening Deepavali celebration, or introduce kesari orange at the blouse sleeve for a livelier contrast. A sleek braid, a small red bindi and warm gold bangles make the richly coloured border feel distinct yet composed.

What does arakku mean in this Kanjeevaram saree?
Arakku is a traditional Kanchipuram colour term for a deep lacquered red-maroon family. Here it describes the rich dark maroon of the silk body, not a separate fabric or dye certification.
How do the small kamalam buttas work with the Zari Kattam body?
The kamalam or lotus motifs appear as little spaced accents over a fine zari-checked field. The contrast between precise lines and rounded flowers gives this dark silk its quiet texture.
What makes the orange border edge stand out?
The narrow kesari-orange selvedge draws a clear warm line along the dark arakku silk. Its impact is strongest in the lower pleats, while the adjacent gold Veldhari stripes keep it connected to the rest of the border.
Could Idam Living make a conservative-neck blouse for a wedding?
A custom blouse can be stitched to your measurements with a higher neckline and your preferred sleeves. Share an inspiration photograph or measurements and Idam Living can discuss the design options.
Why does pure silk sometimes show subtle changes of sheen?
Light reflects differently as the woven silk turns and folds, especially where the fine zari grid crosses it. The colour may also appear slightly different under warm indoor light versus daylight.
