Amethyst Plum Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjivaram Varisaipet Saree with Gold Zari Buttas

Amethyst Plum Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjivaram Varisaipet Saree with Gold Zari Buttas

There is a jewel-like depth to this purple, somewhere between an amethyst and a ripe Naval Pazham. Across the plum silk, tiny golden buttas glimmer like flecks of light on a dark berry skin. The border draws the eye closer, where successive zari bands unfold their floral details, before the pallu turns almost entirely to gold.

❖ This piece took 16 days on the loom to weave in Kanchipuram — handwoven by artisan families whose generational skill keeps this heritage tradition alive.

The Varisaipet border gives this Kanjivaram its layered Kanchipuram character: several decorative bands arranged in a considered sequence instead of a single uninterrupted border. The plum silk body is alive with closely spaced, small circular zari buttas, their delicate regularity set against the richness of the ground. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 16 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: The Varisaipet is composed in successive registers of floral creepers, slender lines and curling paisley forms. Gold zari appears both closely packed and delicately outlined, giving the plum border the layered richness of a finely carved decorative frame.

Pallu: An abundant diamond-shaped zari lattice fills the pallu, its tiny repeated forms making a gold surface that shifts as the silk moves. Fine geometric side bands and ornamental framing keep the dense weave ordered rather than overwhelming.

Styling: For a quiet, gem-toned palette, choose a deep plum blouse with small gold earrings. Or contrast the purple with a champagne silk blouse and a strand of pearls. A neat braid, delicate jasmine and an open shoulder pallu allow the bands of Varisaipet zari to remain visible.

Occasions: Beautiful for Diwali family celebrations, autumn cultural gatherings, intimate temple ceremonies, wedding receptions and winter classical music evenings.

What is special about a Varisaipet border on a Kanjivaram saree?
Varisaipet is a traditional arrangement of multiple border bands. On this plum saree, fine zari lines separate successive floral and paisley-patterned registers, creating rich detail without one large uninterrupted panel.
What motifs appear on the plum-purple body?
Small circular gold zari buttas appear in closely ordered rows across the amethyst-plum silk. Their delicate scale lets the deep colour show through.
Is the pallu woven as heavily as the border?
The pallu features a much denser diamond-shaped zari lattice, with narrow bands along its edges. Its closely repeated pattern creates a pronounced gold gleam against the plum ground.
Can this saree be styled with a contrasting blouse?
Champagne, antique gold and deep plum all complement the jewel-toned purple. A 0.8-metre running blouse piece is included, and custom blouse stitching is available from Idam Living.
Are small variations in the woven gold details normal?
Minor irregularities can be part of an individually handwoven silk saree rather than a printed or machine-perfect surface. Follow the care guidance and request daylight photographs if you would like a closer view of this particular piece.
