Deep Brown Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Zari Kattam Saree with Arakku Gandaberunda Border

Deep Brown Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Zari Kattam Saree with Arakku Gandaberunda Border

A deep brown Kanchipuram with unmistakably old-school character, set against an Arakku red border and a strong field of antique-gold zari. The fine grid across the body gives the silk a measured glow, while the Gandaberunda border brings the visual weight.

❖ Made to order, not off a shelf. This saree spent roughly 16 active days on the loom, in addition to dyeing, threading and finishing.

Woven in the Zari Kattam tradition, the body carries a fine zari-grid structure with spaced buttas that interrupt the geometry without crowding it. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 16 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: The Arakku red border is the defining feature, with repeated Gandaberunda motifs held between substantial zari bands. The palette and proportion give the saree a distinctly vintage Kanchipuram character without implying that the piece itself is antique.

Pallu: The pallu deepens into Arakku red with a dense gold zari diamond field and ornamented side registers, creating a rich finish when draped over the shoulder.

Styling: Keep the blouse in deep Arakku, brown or black and let the border lead. Antique temple jewellery, a compact jasmine bun and a clean pleated drape will suit its vintage Kanchi mood. It is especially strong for Navratri gatherings, Dussehra ceremonies, Diwali, temple events and weddings.

What is Zari Kattam in this Kanchipuram saree?
Zari Kattam refers to the fine zari-grid structure woven across the silk body. Here it creates a quiet geometric shimmer behind the spaced buttas rather than turning the body into a dense brocade field.
What makes the Gandaberunda border distinctive on this saree?
The Arakku red border carries repeated Gandaberunda motifs framed by broad zari registers. The motif scale and strong red-brown contrast give this saree its vintage Kanchipuram character.
How would you style this deep brown and Arakku saree?
A deep Arakku or brown blouse keeps the palette cohesive, while antique temple jewellery and jasmine work especially well with the border. The saree suits festive occasions, ceremonies, cultural gatherings and special occasions.
Can I have a custom blouse made for this saree?
The saree includes a 0.8 m running blouse piece. Idam Living also offers custom blouse stitching; measurements and preferences can be submitted through the blouse-stitching process after purchase.
Is this saree Silk Mark certified?
Yes. Idam Living is a Silk Mark authorised user, and this Pure Silk Kanchipuram saree is listed within the Silk Mark certified workflow. Silk Mark relates to silk authenticity, not to the motif or design name.
