Ruby Arakku and Emerald Green Rettapet Pure Silk Kanchipuram Saree with Yazhi Border
Ruby Arakku and Emerald Green Rettapet Pure Silk Kanchipuram Saree with Yazhi Border
Ruby Arakku — A Jewel Beneath the Forest Canopy
There is a richness to this Kanchipuram that recalls ruby-red flowers deep within an ancient forest, surrounded by the dark green of rain-soaked leaves. The body is a radiant ruby Arakku, touched by warm crimson and deep plum, while emerald-green silk and antique-gold zari gather along the borders in a composition of extraordinary traditional beauty.

Rettapet frames the ruby Arakku body with paired, richly ornamented border sections in emerald-green silk and antique-gold zari, carrying Yazhi, Mayil and Kamalam-inspired motifs and leading to a pallu of gold zari in a diamond-grid arrangement. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 18 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.
The Body — A Rich Field of Ruby Silk
The lustrous pure silk body is woven in a magnificent deep ruby-red shade, revealing subtle Arakku and plum undertones as the folds catch the light. Small Mayil-inspired gold zari buttas appear at intervals across the silk, introducing a gentle rhythm of ornamentation. The colour has a quiet but unmistakable grandeur.
The Rettapet Border — A Story in Silk and Gold
The magnificent Rettapet composition gives the saree its distinctive framed appearance, with richly ornamented border sections and carefully balanced contrasting bands. A deep emerald-green silk field is bordered by intricate antique-gold zari, lending both depth and architectural character to the drape.
The ornamental border is alive with traditional Kanchipuram imagery — stylised Mayil, Kamalam-inspired floral elements and the magnificent Yazhi, the mythical creature so deeply associated with South Indian temple architecture. Silk-thread detailing works alongside the zari, bringing subtle tonal variation and dimension to the motifs.
The broad central ornamental band resembles an intricately carved temple frieze, while the surrounding rows of smaller motifs, geometric lines and gold detailing create a magnificent layered finish.
The Pallu — An Elaborate Golden Heirloom
The elaborate pallu opens into an extensive field of gold zari woven in a remarkably fine repeating diamond-grid arrangement. Traditional circular floral medallions and ornamental columns run through the design, bordered by exquisitely detailed bands. Its geometric precision and warm antique-gold lustre contrast beautifully with the deep ruby silk.
The result is a pallu with presence — dramatic in its richness, yet wonderfully balanced in its traditional composition.
Styling Notes
Pair with an emerald-green pure silk blouse for a beautiful contrast, perhaps with elbow-length sleeves and fine antique-gold edging. For a richer ceremonial appearance, a deep ruby blouse with silk-thread embroidery would be exquisite. Choose traditional gold jhumkas, a single Kamalam-inspired pendant or a restrained antique temple necklace.
Beautiful for Deepavali, Karthigai Deepam, wedding ceremonies, traditional temple celebrations, family milestones, Pongal festivities and festive evening gatherings.
