Lagoon Turquoise Paapli Checks Pure Silk Kanchipuram Saree with Midnight Navy Rettapet Border

Lagoon Turquoise Paapli Checks Pure Silk Kanchipuram Saree with Midnight Navy Rettapet Border

Imagine the crystalline turquoise of a tropical lagoon, where sunlight passes through clear water and the shadows of distant palms fall across its surface. This magnificent Kanchipuram captures that interplay of light and shadow in silk: a luminous sea-glass turquoise body crossed by an extraordinary arrangement of black, ivory, slate-blue and vermilion-red checks, framed by a midnight-navy border deep as the evening sky over the Bay of Bengal.

❖ Handwoven in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu by artisan weaver families who have practiced this craft for generations, using Silk Mark certified pure silk.

Kanchi Kattam is the traditional Kanchipuram language of checks, woven through intersecting arrangements of coloured silk threads. Here the Paapli checks pair broad turquoise and pale aqua passages with bands of charcoal black, ivory white and deep teal, while slender vermilion-red lines travel through the larger checks like delicate strokes of kumkum. Some intersections appear almost black and white, like the shifting reflections of clouds across still water; others reveal softer slate-grey and blue-green tones, giving the checks remarkable depth and movement. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. Read our story.

Border: A midnight-navy Rettapet border, the traditional Kanchipuram double-border vocabulary of two parallel bands, with brilliant gold zari tracing the upper and lower sections in finely woven geometric textures reminiscent of miniature golden latticework. A slender vivid fuchsia-pink selvedge adds one unexpected note of colour, like a flash of bougainvillea against the evening sky. Explore more in our Blue Silk Sarees collection.

Pallu: A traditional Seer pallu in deep Neelam-inspired midnight blue, adorned with long, beautifully ordered columns of gold zari. Broad golden panels alternate with narrow, needle-fine lines and rich passages of unadorned navy silk, producing the distinctive rhythm of Kanchipuram Seer arrangements. It is especially beautiful when allowed to fall openly over the shoulder, revealing the uninterrupted lengths of gold against the deep blue silk.

Styling: For a polished evening look, pair it with a sleeveless midnight-navy pure silk blouse with a deep V neckline and minimal gold piping, or choose a turquoise blouse with elbow-length sleeves, or a fuchsia-pink silk blouse to echo the selvedge. Keep jewellery restrained: sculptural gold earrings, a single antique-gold cuff or a fine temple-inspired necklace. The geometry of this Kanchi Kattam makes it an especially beautiful choice for Indian classical music concerts in the United States, from a Carnatic vocal recital or a veena or violin concert to Bharatanatyam performances, temple cultural programmes, Karthigai Deepam, winter weddings and elegant festive dinners.
