Leaf Green and Turmeric Yellow Checked Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjivaram Paalum Pazhamum Saree

Leaf Green and Turmeric Yellow Checked Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjivaram Paalum Pazhamum Saree

Green like fresh temple-garden leaves, yellow like turmeric laid out for a ceremony, and deep red like kumkum: this Paalum Pazhamum silk gathers the colours of a Kanchipuram morning into a lively checked field.

❖ 19 days of loom work went into this saree, handwoven in Kanchipuram by generations of artisan weaver families using Silk Mark certified pure silk.

This Kanjivaram carries a traditional Paalum Pazhamum construction in pure mulberry silk, with differently coloured checks creating a vibrant, shifting surface: broad green and turmeric-yellow crossings interrupted by deeper red and earthy brown squares, some holding gold Gandaberunda and elephant motifs. A saree of this type typically represents approximately 19 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. Read our story.

Border: An unusually clean borderless composition lets the many-coloured checks reach almost to the edge. The narrow finished edge keeps the body pattern unbroken, making the colours themselves the saree's frame.

Pallu: The contrasting deep magenta-red pallu is densely worked in a handwoven diamond zari lattice, its closely repeated geometry offering a richer, more luminous counterpart to the open body checks.

Styling: A blouse in dark green silk, turmeric yellow or plain deep magenta brings out a different note in the checks. Choose simple gold jhumkas and let the brightly patterned body remain the centre of attention. A lovely choice for Navratri gatherings, Deepavali visits and informal family festivities.

What is Paalum Pazhamum weaving?
Paalum Pazhamum is a traditional Kanchipuram approach to multicolour checks. The crossing colours form a lively grid rather than a single-colour field, as seen in this leaf-green, turmeric-yellow, red and bronze-brown saree.
Are the bird and elephant figures part of the check design?
Yes. Selected checks contain zari-woven Gandaberunda bird motifs and elephants; other squares are left to the pure interplay of silk colours. This alternating placement keeps the busy palette readable.
What makes this Kanjivaram borderless?
There is no separate broad ornamental border taking over the sides. The check pattern continues almost to the finished edge, giving a clear, graphic view of the multicolour weave.
Could I order a blouse that uses one colour from the checks?
Certainly. Idam Living can discuss a custom blouse in a contrasting green, yellow or magenta fabric, subject to selection and availability. The saree also comes with a 0.8 m running blouse piece.
Why is a handwoven silk check not always perfectly identical across every square?
Small variations in alignment, yarn joins or tension can be natural to handloom work. They are different from actual damage, stains or significant defects, which should be assessed separately.
