Ivory Handwoven Pure Silk Kancheepuram Varisaipet Saree with Arakku Peacock Thazhampoo Border

Ivory Handwoven Pure Silk Kancheepuram Varisaipet Saree with Arakku Peacock Thazhampoo Border

There is a stillness to ivory silk bordered in Arakku red, like pale jasmine laid against the dark red timber of an old Kanchipuram doorway. The open body allows every paisley and peacock butta to be noticed, one small interval at a time.

❖ Made to order, not off a shelf. This saree spent roughly 16 active days on the loom, in addition to dyeing, threading and finishing.

The Varisaipet tradition brings a disciplined succession of bands to the border. Here a quiet ivory body bears spaced maanga paisleys and peacock zari buttas, offering a measured contrast to the more richly organised Arakku edge. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 16 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: Silk-thread and zari are interwoven into repeated Varisaipet rows, with peacock forms and Thazhampoo-inspired detail. The sharp red outline and gold work recall the tiered borders of temple stonework without crowding the pale centre.

Pallu: The Arakku pallu develops the pattern into a stronger composition of paisley and lattice-grid zari, its rich surface giving the ivory body a ceremonial finish.

Styling: Use an Arakku silk blouse to bring the border into the blouse, or stay with warm ivory for a softer impression. A small gold pendant, traditional studs and fresh jasmine will suit a daytime puja; pleat the pallu neatly to reveal its patterned edge.

Occasions: Lovely for temple visits, Diwali pujas, intimate weddings and family ceremonies.

What is special about the Varisaipet border on this ivory saree?
Varisaipet refers to an ordered arrangement of multiple border bands. On this ivory-and-Arakku saree, silk-thread and zari rows frame peacock and Thazhampoo-inspired designs, creating a distinct red architectural edge.
What motifs are woven across the ivory body?
The open ivory field carries spaced paisley and peacock zari buttas. Their generous spacing gives the eye room to appreciate the pure silk ground rather than turning the body into an all-over brocade.
Would this ivory and Arakku saree work for a temple ceremony?
Its ivory body and deep Arakku border make it a graceful option for temple gatherings, Diwali pujas and family ceremonies. Antique gold jewellery and a simple hairstyle leave the red-and-gold border in focus.
Can a blouse be designed around the Arakku border?
Idam Living can discuss a tonal Arakku or ivory blouse and custom stitching choices that complement the border. The included running blouse piece measures 0.8 m; particular border placement should be discussed before cutting.
Will tiny changes in the border weave be normal?
Handloom weaving can show slight changes in yarn tension or motif alignment. That is different from actual damage or a significant weaving defect, which should be raised with Idam Living for review.
