Where the Deepest Twilight Meets Royal Violet
There is a moment just before nightfall when the sky becomes the deepest shade of purple, almost merging with the darkness of the earth. This extraordinary Kanchipuram captures that fleeting beauty in silk. Its body is a rich, blackened aubergine, carrying the undertones of ripe Naval Pazham fruit, while a magnificent royal-violet border arrives like the last brilliant streak of colour across a twilight sky. Antique-gold zari illuminates the composition with the warmth of sunlight falling upon ancient temple bronze.
❖ Woven in Kanchipuram over 16 days on the loom, using Silk Mark certified pure silk, by artisans who have handed this craft down through generations.

Butta refers to individually woven motifs spaced across the silk body. Here, delicate Kamalam and Mayil buttas sit on a deep aubergine ground, framed by a royal-violet border of Mayil, floral and deer motifs. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 16 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.
The Body — A Garden of Golden Buttas
The pure silk body is richly coloured in deep aubergine and brownish plum, its smooth, densely lustrous surface providing a dramatic background for scattered golden buttas. Delicate Kamalam-inspired blossoms and graceful Mayil forms appear like small treasures woven into the silk, their warm zari glow beautifully restrained against the dark ground.
The deliberate spacing of these traditional Kanchipuram motifs gives the body a serene elegance, allowing the richness of the silk and the artistry of each tiny motif to be appreciated individually.
The Border — Peacocks, Deer and a Royal-Violet Tapestry
The border is a magnificent expression of traditional South Indian ornamental weaving. Brilliant royal violet, almost electric in its intensity, frames an extensive field of antique-gold zari. Intricately rendered Mayil motifs, floral vines and distinctive deer-inspired figures emerge among the curling ornamental patterns.
The deer adds a particularly enchanting note, recalling the quiet woodland scenes and sculptural creatures that appear throughout the decorative traditions of South Indian temples. The surrounding gold zari is arranged in elaborate panels with small geometric and floral divisions, giving the border the appearance of a finely carved golden frieze.
The Pallu — A River of Molten Gold
The pallu unfolds into a breathtaking expanse of antique-gold zari woven over rich royal-violet silk. Closely arranged geometric patterns create a shimmering golden lattice, complemented by ornate columns of traditional motifs. As the folds move, the finely woven gold alternates between warm radiance and darker shadow, lending extraordinary depth to the drape.
The vivid violet selvage and tasselled finishing make this pallu especially beautiful when draped openly over the shoulder.
Styling Notes
Choose a royal-violet pure silk blouse with elbow-length sleeves to draw out the colour of the border, or a deep aubergine blouse for a seamless jewel-toned silhouette. Antique-gold temple jewellery, a sculptural choker or traditional jhumkas would complement the intricate border without competing with it.
A striking choice for Deepavali festivities, Karthigai Deepam, winter weddings, temple celebrations, traditional evening receptions and significant family occasions. Its rich colours also make it particularly beautiful for evening portraits in warm, golden light.
